My New 'Signature' Humbucker:

Having an overall good clean tone to start with, especially in a three piece band to me is essential. It's probably why I've always gravitated towards non-master volume Marshalls, Hiwatt, Vox, and some Fender amps. It's easy to turn the guitar volume up to add some filth, and then hit a pedal for more drive. You can't get clean when your base tone is too dirty or compressed.

You made me immediately remember the Paul Gilbert rig rundown. He's getting all his dirt from the pedalboard and his tone is EPIC.

Well, a very Good Morning to all of you...

Last night, I broke in the new DiMarzio pickup at one of our marsthom-esque, 6 hour performances.

Everything went very well, but I really can't give much of a detailed report. We had some vocal monitor problems last night and I wasn't really able to hear my guitar.

Having said that, everyone told us the mix out in the main venue - and even further out onto the patios - was really well balanced.

During our soundcheck, the DiMarzio really seemed much more articulate than any of the pickups I have used in it previously.

I really feel like the 'true test' of this pickup will be when I can produce a recording for you guys to listen to.

After speaking with DiMarzio, and telling them my tone was very "one dimensional," and listening to soundclips, they made the following suggestions:

1. Adjust slug bobbin height to 9/64" from underside of high 'e' fretted at 22nd fret

2. Adjust slug bobbin to 9/64" from underside of low 'E' fretted at 22nd fret

3. Adjust low 'E' pole piece to 8/64" from underside of low 'E' fretted at 22nd fret

4. Adjust 'A' pole piece to 7/64" from underside of 'A' string fretted at 22nd fret

5. Adjust 'D' pole piece to 6/64" from underside of high 'e' fretted at 22nd fret

6. Adjust 'g' pole piece to 1/64" BELOW bobbin surface fretted at 22nd fret

7. Adjust 'b' pole piece to 8/32" from underside of 'b' fretted at 22nd fret

8. Adjust high 'e' pole piece to 7/32" from underside of high 'e' fretted at 22nd fret

Skeptical at first, I went ahead and did it, ending up with pole pieces staggered almost identical to the photo and all I can say is "Wow..."

The clarity in string to string phrasing is a 100% improvement....

Dimarzio has really amazed me. Look at the photo of my waveform.

The first waveform is my Schecter Hellraiser C1FR with EMG 81TW at 4/64" from the strings.

The second is my YelloStrat with the Dimarzio Neanderthal adjusted to their above listed specs.

Output level is identical...even tone is remarkably similar.
