My new band :-)

It took me forever to assemble, but I finally put together a solid band. Tomorrow is our first practice.

It's been difficult, because people my age either have many years of experience, or they suck! And, It's not an option for me join an existing band of strangers and dive in...not happening.

So, I have a nice blend. The best part is, i'm the lead by default...the other guitar is the only member with less experience than me. My brother on Bass, the singer, and drummer all have 30+ years of gigging so it's a solid foundation. I recruited a keyboard player from work, he's the big wild card. I know he can play and sing so I'm hopeful.

It's no secret i'm a rocker at heart...yea, metal-head even. But, the purpose of this band is to eventually play out, so there won't be much metal for me. Not sure if our first selections will stay, but its purpose is just to get the ball rolling.. Our first 5 songs are......

Foreigner - Double Vision
Donnie Iris - Ah Leah
Rainbow - Stone Cold
Grand Funk Railroad - We're an American Band
Stray Cats - Stray cat Strut

Together we have a library of 100's of songs ready to go, but we'll only ad a song or 2 weekly over the next few months. (Hope they know i'll be adding a Sabbath...resistance is futile)

That's that......It's Jam time. Pumped!!

You might be surprised at some of the stuff that goes over big.
Personally, I think it’s all about presentation...if the band pumps it out with fervor, the crowd picks up on it.

Our last gig, a benefit thing, bit of a biker thing too...the 2 most freaked out about songs we played were; Iron Maiden's The Trooper, and Peter Gabriel’s Shock The Monkey(done stylistically similar to the Local H version). I had a hard time loading my car, I was stopped so many times, and told by someone that they couldn’t believe we played..._____…like that...

When we play some of the local bars it’s Tool’s Sober, Talking Heads’ Psycho Killer, Metallica’s Seek and Destroy, and Rush’s Working Man that fill the dance floor.(in pretty much that order of popularity)...it’s weird.

Good luck sir!
Most of all, have fun!

Awesome!
I hope it gels and all the pieces come together in a synergistic "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts".
Funny, the last song I heard on the way in was Mountain: The Animal Trainer and the Toad - about a band coming together and gigging / touring.

I hope to someday play the Zappa song Joe's Garage in a guy named Joe's garage with a couple of quarts of beer, playing the same old songs......
And hope on one calls the police.

Nice start of a playlist - nothing too obvious that every other band out there is playing.

And a special shout-out for including Stray Cats...any guitar player with the salt to even attempt pulling off Brian Setzer gets much respect from me.

Thanks TBD .....I know what you mean. I've watched my buddies band, they play everything from rick James, Michael Jackson to Sabbath and Mettalica, and people love it. Just need to show some energy and enthusiasm. My brothers band doesn't have a set list, and they just cater to the crowd at hand. I'm hoping we get a few hundred songs of variety going.

Thanks for the support everyone. We had our first practice last night,, and It went fantastic. We were tight, and had some great jams. I even got to play some of "my" kind of tunes, like judas priest, ac/dc, and sabbath. No one would play megadeath, huhhhh go figure.

I was very impressed with the keyboard player, he was the only one I wasn't sure about and he settled any debate in my mind. He brings a fresh variety of ideas. He's a master at Floyd, I was smiling.

We tossed out dozens of ideas some of which will be awesome down the road, but for now we simply added 5 more songs for next week.

Magic Carpet Ride - Steppenwolf
November Rain - GnR
Fantasy - Aldo Nova
Dream Police - Cheap Trick
Rock This Town - stray cats

The highlight of the evening for me was my brothers praise of my leads. I nailed Stone Cold and I think I surprised him. Hard work is paying off.

There's a lot of intricacy in Stone Cold, especially the original solo...

There sure are. I'm not the best at improv and I love the original, so I learned it as is. All the tasty fills and lead...I'm not playing a strat and I use a bit more gain, but I feel I do it justice with my own flair. There was a bit of hesitation to perform this song by the singer, but we did it well and I think it's here to stay. Probably ad a few Deep Purple songs as well.
