My Marshall DSL40c is Woke

Speaker change is huge on that amp. Try lifting one leg on C19 then play and see. I did it with mine. If you really like it, leave it. If not, put it back. If you like it both ways, mount a switch.

Yup, that's my thinking too.
Did you end up keeping it, like/dislike the results?

That amp really benefits from a speaker change, my opinion only.

Never liked my DSL combo, until I ditched the original speaker.

I, also did the c-19 mod, and then it was "nothin' but love" for that amp.

Although I did move it on to a co-workers husband. He had started playing, was progressing quite well, and needed a tube amp. Neve have seen someone fall in love with the DSL so quick as that guy.

I do miss it every so often, and have had thoughts of a replacement. But I'll never get that Freidman if I keep buying other amps.

Enjoy your DSL, a fine amp, more versatile than given credit for.

I use my JVM 99% of the time. Lately however, I've been playing early early, or late night. So I started using the DSL.
Then I remembered, it Sucks.

Actually, when I first got it, I really enjoyed it. Then over time I wasn't digging it. I decided to change something or sell it. Glad I went thru it. I haven't given it a true test yet though....Saturday or Sunday I'm going to open it up and see where I stand. But, so far, our counselling has paid off and we're getting along much better........ummm, the Amp and I, that is.

I liked mine when I got it. After a while, I wasn’t happy so I changed the speaker to an Eminence Governor. I was happy for a while but that faded. I did the C19 mod. Then I undid the C19 mod. I rolled some preamp tubes.
I sold it and bought a Fender Bassbreaker 30R.
NOW I’m happy!!!!

I enjoyed my DSL 40 , I put a V30 in it and C19 clip. I found channel 1 in Crunch still wasn't ballsy enough so I always had to use anOD with it. Nice grab n go thpugh.
Then I found my 6101.
3 channels of Marshall bliss, tiny footprint, loaded with everything. Sounds great,no pedals required so I sold the DSL. I think had it been a CR version with all the footswitching I might have kept it.
Really good amps though IMO.

I still love my budget friendly Marshall

But you've always got the JVM, sweet fallback position.

I've been struggling with the fizz on my DSL100HR for the last few days. I ended up with 5751's in V2 and V3 and this seems to have completely fixed the issue without making the amp too anemic. The clean channel is nice, crunch is pretty mild but works great with a drive pedal, OD1 sounds like a hot rodded 800 and OD2 is awesomely over the top. Still have 12AX7's in V1 and V4. V1 didn't seem to get along well with a 5751 and I see no point in reducing the output of the phase inverter when you have a master volume.

This is the tube compliment I had in my DSL40C:

V1 - ECC823
V2 - 5751
V3 - ECC83MG
V4 - 5751 (balanced) for PI

It was suggested to me by Robert Herndon, so I can’t take credit for it. Overall, it helped to reduce the gain as the amp has way too much IMHO.

Cool
Great amp when you can get a handle on the "fizz" and "sizzle"

That sounds like a couple of good names for your next two cats!

There you go! We were starting to run out of names ending in "oo".

Played the amp quite a bit today at can't quite yell over it level and I seem to have all of that fizz and sizzle under control. Tried 3 guitars all with different pickups and they sounded great. Gain up around 6-7 sounds really good on OD1 and OD2. Very aggressive up there.

The fizz was the only thing I never liked about my DSL when I owned it.

In my case, the c-19 mod fixed it right up. I did, however find that if I ran it "stupid" loud the fizz went away? IDK.

Great amps, I ended up selling mine to a co- workers husband that recently started playing again after a long hiatus. He was so stoked, made me feel good to turn him onto the "Marshally" goodness.

Ha, I'm rambling, too long of a week already.

Mine also got a Robert Herndon recommendation
ECC83 V1
12AT7 V2
12AX7 V3
5751 V4
I can now run my gain at 3 on OD 2, with the SD1, and all my clips for the last 6 months have been with this configuration, no fizz on my end, and plenty of sizzle !!
Cheers
