My favorite things...

Don't we all have our favorite objects? You know, things that are essential to us, that even make part of our very personality. I got many.

Just ordered a fresh pair of black high top Chuck Taylors.

I can't live without these. I wear them since I was like 10 years old and can't imagine attending a rock concert, a recording/rehearsal session in a studio or a gig in a more unpretentious venue without my road worn pair.

The ones I currently own are quite trashed already, with a nice patina, and shows signs of needing someone to throw the towel soon. These Chucks have seen countless late-night urban adventures, with sex, alcohol and guitars involved.

I know, they are uncomfortable, a pain in the butt to put on and take off, they're not elegant nor proper for someone who is older than 30 years old, but that exactly the point: they're no good to anyone, thus being perfect for everybody.

I'll be wearing Chucks in my 80s (if I get there). Screw arch support.

Man, I got poisons snakes, wild boar, packs of coyote running through my woods. I have literally stepped out my back door to find a 4' Cottonmouth less than two steps from the house. Yikes! I got mean critters here!

1. quality upmarket leather
2. well designed joggers (cross trainers) or
3. skin on the ground.
Hell I don't even own a pair of thongs (flipflops sandals), if it's warm I like to feel the grass or sand under my feet.

My favorite things ...
I have a couple of tee shirts 30 or more years old, so precious they come out possibly once a year.

I own a pair of Mizuno Sayonara trainers I wear at the gym, only.

At work I wear the average Italian/English leather shoes, but in my off duty/musician time, you'll find me in blue Levi's, chucks or boots and a plain black or white tee.

If I'm home or by the beach,you won't find me without Havaianas. Me or any Brazilian.

Hmmm...interesting thread.

I have a few simple, favorite things.

Since the thread started off with footwear, here is what I prefer...

...boots, particularly wide-toed, harness boots.

Another favorite thing?

This brown glass I got from Walmart. There's nothing special about it, but it's the perfect size for me and I drink everything out of it...coffee, tea, water, juice...

Maybe it's stupid, but I like it.

Like Sergio, I like Zippos, too. I only have one - this thinline Zippo. I don't smoke, so I rarely use it, but I like having one.

I've also always liked oil lamps. Here are couple of cheapos. I have a couple others.

Lastly, (for now!) I like...I REALLY like fountain pens. Here are all I have. I prefer what I call the "daily writer" type pens, not the super high-end units.

The Waterman pen in the foreground looks more expensive than it is. I use it occasionally. It's a pretty nice screw converter fill pen. The nib is wider than I prefer. It has a medium nib, but it's wider than my other medium nib pens. If I got a fine nib, I'd probably use it more.

Viewing left to right, the pens in the first row in the stand are a Wearever, a Lady Sheaffer, and an Esterbrook. These are all lever-fill pens and probably go back to the '50s. The Wearever is a really low-dollar pen. It was pretty much the Bic pen of it's day. The Lady Sheaffer was made a little smaller to fit a lady's hand. The Esterbrook is a pretty middle of the road pen. I don't use these, but they're kind of cool.

The pens in the back row are a Cross pen and an Italian Yafa. The cross is nice. It's a screw-converter fill pen and I use it a lot. I've had it for several years. The Yafa is not an exotic pen. It's pretty utilitarian, but it's a nice writer and I use it almost daily. It uses replaceable cartridges.

Anyway, to take a line from "The Sound of Music"..."These are a few of my favorite things."

Not too many things I feel attached to except my guitars.

But I really like Doc Martens boots. I bougt a new pair today. They take me a few weeks to break in properly, but when they are broken in, they fit me really well.

And I like my Kindle as well. It's full of beer books and musical biographies (reading Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run" at the moment), and I bring it wherever I travel.

And last but not least, I keep an old cobblestone in front of my fireplace. I found it outside the first appartment I lived in after moving out from my parents'. I keep it to remind me of the places I have lived and the changes I have gone through in my life. At the same time it reminds me of the things in life and in me that are constant.

Makarov, nice little handgun and a great workhorse, man. I owned one. It was one of my favorites and I wish I never got rid of it. Mine was bored for the standard 380 though. That thing would eat any 380 you put in it and I never had the first issue with it (same with the much more expensive 9mm Glock I had). Mine was totally reliable and more than accurate enough for typical handgun distances...

I have an East German and Bulgarian, both in 9mm MAK. Most reliable pistol design for my needs, and the size is IWB perfect. EG is the safe queen; Bulgy is my carry.
