My Beloved U.S. Air Force Turns 70 Today!

Sp8ctre

Ambassador of Steel
Country flag
I come from a family with a long history of service in the military. My grandfather survived the landing on Normandy and my father served proudly in the USAF. I too served proudly for 26 years in the USAF!

Happy Birthday to the mightiest air power and the most dedicated service members in the world!

Only 70? I woulda guessed more--

very Cool HAPPY B DAY! and thank you to you and your Kin for their service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now --- lets go blow some poop up!!!! ;)

The song goes back even further.
The last line in each verse was originally
"Nothing can stop the Army Air Corps".
The line was changed when they became
an independent branch of the 5 services.

Hey Air force!
Happy Birthday and thanks for all the
really cool fireworks over the years.

:)

The plane is all about the 30 mm chin gun.
If you look at it head on you notice that the gun is offset to the port side of the plane.
This was done in order to place the barrel that is actually firing on the centerline.
If I'm not mistaken, they came up with the gun first and then built a plane to carry it.

Recoil[edit]
Because the gun's recoil forces could push the entire plane off target during firing, the weapon itself is mounted laterally off-center, slightly to the port side of the fuselage centerline, with the actively "firing" barrel in the nine o'clock position (when viewed from the front of the aircraft), so that the firing barrel lies directly on the aircraft's centerline. The firing barrel also lies just below the aircraft's center of gravity, being bore-sighted along a line 2 degrees below the aircraft's line of flight. This arrangement accurately centers the recoil forces, preventing changes in aircraft pitch or yaw when fired. This configuration also leaves space for the front landing gear, which is mounted slightly off-center on the starboard side of the nose.[19]

The GAU-8/A utilizes recoil adapters. They are the interface between the gun housing and the gun mount. By absorbing (in compression) the recoil forces, they spread the time of the recoil impulse and counter recoil energy transmitted to the supporting structure when the gun is fired.

The A-10 engines were initially susceptible to flameout when subjected to gases generated in the firing of the gun. When the GAU-8 is being fired, the smoke from the gun can make the engines stop, and this did occur during initial flight testing.[2] Gun exhaust is essentially oxygen-free, and is certainly capable of causing flameouts of gas turbines. The A-10 engines now have a self-sustaining combustion section. When the gun is fired the igniters come on to reduce the possibility of a flameout.[20]

The average recoil force of the GAU-8/A is 10,000 pounds-force (45 kN),[3][21] which is slightly more than the output of each of the A-10's two TF34 engines of 9,065 lbf (40.3 kN).[22] While this recoil force is significant, in practice a cannon fire burst slows the aircraft only a few miles per hour in level flight.[

If I were to mount this gun on my car facing backwards,
put the car in neutral and hit the trigger, my car would break
the interstate speed limit in less than 3 seconds.

Tony you are correct on all counts on the A-10! My first base was the only A-10 traing base in the USAF back in 1979. I got to see this bad boy fly every day.
I was also fortunate enough to see it on the range destroying everything in it's path!

I lived pretty much next door to China Lake Naval Weapons Test Center for 19 1/2 months.
At night we would drive out to the boundary, sit there and watch the fireworks.
Thank you U.S. Navy for all those cool fireworks too.
(During the day we had our own fun with M109 self propelled 155 mm Howitzers.
The drag races and point blank (500 yards) live fire practices were the most fun.)

Speakin of blow poop up,does North Korea come to mind ??

I think the 33 year old over there is making noise because he wants attention.
He isn't thinking this all the way through. If I was running a country the last
thing I would want would be to attract the attention of the United States.
That has been known to end badly at times.

Hopefully he will go too far and his neighbors will take
care of it, or maybe his own people for that matter.

Exactly where he is at----- the US is not his problem --- its PISSING OFF CHINA ---- who likes the U.S. Dollar -- they will just walk down there and Jack slap that little turd silly ---- take his toys and declare a new province......done......I predict it will take about a week........if that ........AND i DONT THINk ANYONE WILL GIVE TWO CRAPS.

China's big problem is they are afraid of reunification. They don't want the US backed South Koreans on their border...and oh by the way China and Korea have been fueding for around 1000 years at least...
