As a kid, in a good Christian home, I was forbidden from listening to rock music. I would keep cassettes hidden and play them only when my folks were gone.
I was encouraged to play in my Mom's band and it seemed like country was seemingly the predominant genre in the Central California farm country where I grew up.
I became resentful that my own musical desires were somewhat hampered, yet I was encouraged to play country...and because that's what earned me a living, I did it.
In secret, I was listening to Mountain, Ram-Jam, Black Sabbath, and Scorpions and by night I was playing in hard-core country bars, many of which were in remote locations.
Somehow, I feel like my own musical influences got somehow infused with a country flair that I've never really liked. This is probably why I seldom write original material for myself.
If I co-write within a group, I can seemingly come up with some very complex arrangements, but writing on my own, everything takes on a "swamp rock" kind of tone.
Back a few years ago, I lost a home (my first purchase) to foreclosure in the crash of 2008. A few years later, I received a check from Wells Fargo for $113.00, as part of a class action settlement for unfair lending.
I began to lament over this and became angry how these banks could steal people's homes and sumy buy their way out of it.
I also became frustrated with how the laws only seem to protect those who do wrong.
These frustrations, along with increasing government encroachment on our freedoms, prompted me to write a song in 2015 called 'Revolution. '
The song is basically a warning to corrupt politicians, law enforcement, banks and the media, that if you keep pushing the American people, you will end up with a domestic revolt.
Keep in mind that this was written long before our current administration and all the things that have made recent headlines.
I'm presenting it as a musical snapshot into how I write and arrange, despite being deeply submerged in hard rock and metal.
I'm not sure what you would call this particular style, but I post it in hopes that we can dissect it and maybe even discuss how your own style has been either positively or negatively impacted by what you grew up listening to.
