Modified Ace Les Paul?

I've watched those Midnight Special clips a hundred times and still can't get over how freaking amazing that band was in its prime. No wonder I wanted to play guitar, Ace is a beast!
For sure! I think people who felt they were a gimmick need to watch this and if you think the makeup is lame, ignore it or think of Alice C. Just part of the show. But boy did they tear it up!! Practised their moves so they know what to do

Not sure that is any kind of definitive proof of anything. A '73, bought in '73, previous owner had already modified and resold in time for him to get it used? Plausible, but I'm not sure.
His logic doesn't seem to be supported by much more than a hunch, and that was an era when so many Deluxes were being routed for humbuckers that the shop may have been doing them in advance because they knew they would be an easy sell, or, more likely (to me) he had the mods done to it at the time of sale.

It is a fertile ground for speculation, no doubt.

What I find somewhat refreshing is how readily he just set about making it more playable, using a screwdriver for a chisel, no less!

Obviously, he did use some sandpaper at some point, and there was some paint applied. I respect his motivation to make his guitar do what he needed.

I'll bring it up again - but Gibson either didn't know about Ace's mods, or they had a major collective brain malfunction by not highlighting this when they released the Axcess. This would have been the ideal marketing to get the naysaying public to warm up to the idea.

I checked out Deuce and SHE and I definitely see double white/cream HB's. gball, I am thinkin these are definitely early Super D'S

Now ive been watching Kiss videos from 1977. Forgot just how good these guys are.
When I got laid off back in 09, when I wasn’t job hunting I was was able to catch some concerts on VH1. Don’t think the channel is still around. Anyway. They liked to play KISS and Rush concerts. As well as many others. So got to see some early…. Mid…. And later KISS concerts. And I agree. Really grew to appreciate them.

Now here’s how my weird brain functions. Today I like bands like Rush. ELP. Yes. And of course. AC/DC and KISS. But for different reasons. Rush, etc for the complicated music they played. Weird time signatures. Weird keys…. Not just major keys. But I like KISS and AC/DC for the just down to earth rock they played. Frankly. Nothing fancy or complicated about their music. Pretty much any kid that learned how to play power chords can play along with both bands. Not that personally I’ve tried. It’s the kind of rock that drew me to the genre. Hard. Driving. Loud. You feel the kick drum and bass in your chest.

I learned to appreciate groups like Rush.

Which would be why with my contribution to this thread I said not 100% sure on the story. Just that it made good reading. When Smitty asked Jethro the question, my first thought with zero research has already been mentioned. He was a broke musician trying to get a start and bought the first guitar he could afford. How many of our guitar hero’s started exactly that way? A bunch I’m betting. Heck. It’s the way most of us started as well.
