Mixing Gold and Nickel:

Decided to trade for the ultra-quiet, loaner Epiphone Probuckers in the Les Paul Custom Replica I am giving to my Mom for Mothers Day, rather than install the hotter GFS VEH Alinco V pickups.

I added K40Y tone capacitors, a .033uf bridge and. 015uf neck along with a 220k bleed to take the highs off the bridge.

Now I have a brand new set of gold VEH pickups...do I dare perform sacrilege and put them in the SG????

Ya know Robert a person just never knows what a certain pickup will sound like in a guitar unless you put um in there and try um.

or build a new guitar around them.

Oh Lord!

Well, that is a thought!!! I was going to put them in the Les Paul Custom Replica (Mom's Mother's Day gift) but she heard the video (the clean one) and wanted to keep what was already in it...Epiphone Probuckers.

Nope, don't do it.

That special is special as is, doesn't need gold (still can't believe you removed the 490R - it's such a great PU in an SG special; heaven!).

Not only did I remove the noisy and "buzz-when-you-touch-them" stock 490's, (which sounded very thin) I replaced them with a set of Gibson's 2017 revised specification 490's which were noisy, thin in the bridge and muddy in the neck position.

I then swapped in s brand new set of Gibson '57 Classics and again encountered noise and a very thin tone on the bridge with an overtly muddy neck tone.

I thought I was alone in this until I started reading reviews of similar experiences with Gibson pickups.

All three sets were tried with PCB and vintage wiring with identical results.

The GFS pickups have a very balanced tone and no noise.

What can I say????

The GFS pickups literally saved it from the band saw. Listen to the before and after videos - the 490 can't even get close to the GFS Classic II's....
