Marshall JVM - Anybody use one?

I'm getting the itch again. I sold my DSL100HR a little over a year ago, still have my home built 2203 and 1987 heads, but I am thinking I want to get something with an effects loop and some versatility. I wasn't very impressed with the clean channel on the DSL or trying to run my 800 copy clean. I'm thinking about picking up the 20 watt 800 head, or possibly going with the 50 watt two channel JVM. Has anyone got much experience with the JVM line? I've never played through one and with my current location it isn't practical to try one. I'm kind of looking for one amp that will go from nice cleans to screaming. I guess other brands would be an option too. I'm kind of looking for one amp to do it all with modern features.

Good to see you posting sir!
I’m afraid that I’m not much help, other than second-ish hand POV, but hey…
What I can offer is… Of the three people that I can remember sending me stuff recorded with a JVM….all have been nothing but happy with their amps. I have been happy with the materials they’ve sent too. Super versatile. Clean to crushed, I’ve heard nothing but good stuff.

Thanks Don. I've been less than pleased with cleans on my Marshalls in the past. My 1987 is nice until you turn up the volume. Otherwise I have always found the cleans a bit (or a lot) lacking on any other Marshall I have owned. Thanks for your input!

I have a JVM410 so 4 channel. The 2 is missing some modes I like. Depends on one's style.
THe 2 series has basically clean mode from ch1 and goes to Red mode ch 2 from tne 410. The other channel I think is channel 4 so crazy gain. I find ch 2 red to sometimes need more gain for old school metal stuff so the 4 channel works best for me. The 2 might be great for you.
Thr JVM has a tighter less open sound than 800 say because of high neg feedback.

It does everything IMO, at least 4he 4 channel does. Footswitchable fx loop too. Love mine. I don't use it enough mainly because of hauling around that head and minimum 2x12 horizontal cab. Overkill for most of our shows.
I need to use it more.
PS I basically never use clean.
2 master volumes you can go from clean ch 1 and switch MODES with the foot to go to high red gain mode, same channel, switch to channel 2 . At same volume then boost with MV 2.

Thanks for the input. Maybe I should think about the 410. On these new amps with the master volume you can still get a great sound without being cranked. My DSL sounded great at lower volumes on the 100 watt setting. It just wasn't super versatile in the cleaner ranges.

JVM410 sounds great at low volumes and that series has 3 clean modes, 1 full channel dedicated to cleanish from sparkling to slightly crunchy. These 3 modesa are footswitchable as well. The 2 series has to combine ch 1 and 2 so if you want cleans (not really Marshall's main thing IMO ) then the 4 series is the one. Head or 2x12 combo only.

And it's only $200 more than a 2 series...

Got two 'dem buggers:

The JVM 410 will do it all. It is literally Marshalls flagship amplifier.
The 50w model is actually really good too, (I played a couple ) but I am much more familiar with her 410h

Although I don't use it for cleans, myself, it has a 100 flavors of rock and metal onboard.

Reverb is great, programmable footswitch, sounds good at any volume. After owning dozens of amps, it is my favorite amp of all time.
I can't speak enough about how great this amplifier is.

The DSL is (in my humble opinion) really good at one thing: High gain mayhem. But it is not versatile whatsoever. I sold 2 of those off to get something more versatile.

My extra 2 cents worth.

Oh hell, I couldn't justify the extra cost of a JVM right now especially since I don't make any money from playing, so I got another DSL100HR. I forgot how much I really like it. The DSL actually sounds great for what I like to play. It sounds great with the stock tubes, but I have put some vintage preamp tubes in already. An RCA 12AX7 in v1, a couple of GE JAN 5751s in v2 and v3 and a Toshiba 12ax7 in v4. It seems to be a little smoother. Waiting on some new power tubes. EH 6ca7s of course. I really like the way the low end sounds with those. Carry on.

Me too! Got a pair of them in my old 4104... :celebrate:
EH 6CA7 is not really a 6CA7, it's not a pentode.
It's a Tetrode.
Do not plug it into a PV windsor or a Traynor, because it will short the suppressor grid to ground.
And in amps that have negative voltage connected to the suppressor grid, it will fry the power transformer.
It's already happened.

EH 6CA7 is more like a Russian 6L6 than it is a 6CA7.
