marshall dsl5c ....yumminess

That’s the newer version. My DSL-5C is the older one that has only a single control for the “Clean” channel. The newer version with a separate gain and volume is more useful. This one also has reverb; mine doesn’t.

His comment at 6:54, “There’s a fine line between too much gain on this amp and, sort of, not enough, when it comes to the Ultra Gain channel,” pretty much matches my experience.

His gain and volume settings on the Ultra channel at 4:31 are pretty much getting into the sweet spot on the amp. His gain is at 12:00. Setting the gain between 12:00 and 2:00 sounds best to me on that amp.

His gain setting at 5:44 on the Ultra channel is about as far as you go before the fizziness starts to become apparent. He has it at 3:00. I find that to be just at the limit of sounding decent. I prefer back around 2:00. At 3:00 you can hear it getting a bit ratty, in person.

His comment on the effects loop is pretty much spot on. I think the FX loop sounds good and is very useful.

so... you hate yours and can send it to @Zzzzz for destruction?

Actually, I don’t hate it! For the most part I like it. It’s actually a pretty decent amp. There are just a few things about it that are limiting but which may not be an issue in some applications.

Now, I have read that a 12” Greenback can really help with the fizziness. This has been on my tentative list of things to try.

Maybe I could raffle it off between you and @Zzzzz! I could set up a Zoom call and have a live drawing.

But, I’m still using it at the moment and I haven’t really decided what to do with it; I may hang onto it. I haven’t decided…

You know, I have this Marshall MG50 CRD that I bought new in 1999 and it's such a great amp. It's lightweight and has a spring reverb too.

i had the dsl20 and it was ok but in the studio i couldn't use it. there was some sort of top end fizz at any setting that we couldnt get rid of. i ended up selling it. ive got a little ac4c112 that i modded a bit and now its like a tiny jcm800.

Interesting!!!

I have a Blackstar ID-Core 100watt that is my main DAW amp. I don't like how it sounds live, but through my DAW, it sounds great, but its not a good sounding amp live.

Here's an outtake solo recorded on the Blackstar direct out:
