Decided to cut back to 1 4x12. Keeping greenies on top Vintage/75t on bottom..just amazing all around cab--All English Celestions & the Vintage & 75t are early first runs..nothing like the newer China(i dig them also for the heavies-real tight-hit hard)

Observations
X pattern vinatge/75 (the most balanced across the board freq spectrum they ever measured..no weakens..can be recorded with mic angle to pick up a natural comb filtering, was used by a studio for IR 's last summer) i agree just a great hard rock cab

greenie on top..more open out in room..better for rock than harder metal, the greenies & vin/75 blend real well as the sound spreads out, not 1 of the speakers dominates & it even seems warm maybe..bluesy stuff sounds real nice

greenie on bottom they get dominated by vintage/75..cab is more focused right at you vs in the X pattern that evens the sound more than this cab..almost like the greenies become a shelf for the others to ride over

pretty cool but would rather play than gear analyze any day..

I miss a 412 sometimes. It was nice for running low wattage amps, makes them sound bigger than they are. I usually had phase issues with recording them how I wanted. Sometimes I could use the phasing to good effect.

I use mostly 112 cabs now to eliminate that as much as possible. I keep them off axis and use ribbon mics for both proximity and the high off axis rejection they offer. I've got the best live recordings with that config.

I haven't tried it myself yet but there is a technique for recording 412s that uses a very precise SM57 mic placement. The creator now sells clips for this purpose and I've read all the heavy music recorded today uses his technique.
not a big 57 fan(lil harsh on clean stuff imho, but cool when i doin the heavies) here is what my studio does every time..strait & that angle..def a good capture...but it is a close mic sound for sure..great for crunch & stuff but i always thought notes didnt bloom or fill out on the grill...how i know..lol..dummy me puts the ear there...then mics it...then moves the mic all ove. Took me about a month to learn my mic's. Just like gear we all will have favorites..i now consider my mic & preamp absolutely part of my sound

have really pulled the mic back since i started recording..i find where it sounds just right in the room & exactly there, goes my Blue Spark...can not thell the dif between the room sound or in the iso closet on monitors. have to run the GAP 73 full volume but no gain side..its a neutral non colored capture...

man..this just all spit out..BastardD.. you have created disciples of sound. reproduction ..lol

found 2 pics of the micing from the studio i record at & then what i do at home..ihave a small & large capsule MXL DX2 on grill & then the 993 on the 45

then what i now do for all my rhythm strums to get a big open sound,,needs nothing in the mix ..it has the room with it

Yep, just it's best to learn the gear you have really well. I'm not big on close micing either. I still do it but it's the lowest part of the mix when I blend room and grille mics. I don't have anymore 57s because of that. I've got one 58, which is essentially the same mic, but I only used I for live vocals. Now I have a Sontronics Solo which is like a really rounded 58 sound. Still mid focused but richer sounding. Haven't tracked guitar on it yet though. Might try it soon.

I do like the sound you're getting on the clips you've posted. Love Joe Meek gear it's great.
Thanks, the JoeMeek 6Q is such a cool old school peace of gear..it just does something for her vocals & use it n the 45 angle mics for some reason on guitars. Maybe i just learned those 2 & the 4 mic's i use....comfortable with them. Do get the sounds i want definitely before put a mic on the cab. have this ritual,,, a/b all my gear all week as a song starts to develop..than bam !! when it hits..the drums & rythym & bass all go on at same time. I have Reaper all set with color coded tracks for the parts..cause i get in a trance & dont want to be a computer guy at that point..pure focus on the main body of the song..relentless until its locked in..surprisingly not to long..but every single song happens as soon as i get a drum locked in Verse & chrous..then i can add lib the structure with the words.. but i have to have that ah hah momment..then its on !!
