LP Tribute refinish, take 2...

I'm already thinking of a new plan. It involves stripping it back down (with an actual stripper) to raw wood and starting over. I wasn't happy with the way the grain didn't pop when I did the tea wash and I think it's because there was still oil deep in the grain. If I strip it raw, then I can do another tea wash, then use some Keda dyes (the powder kind that you mix with water) to get my color. I've used them a few times now on other projects and they work great, I just haven't done it on a maple top.

I'm actually more excited to do this than to continue on with what I'm doing.. :ROFLMAO:

@fitz that's what I'm finding out. I've been doing some research and it seams strippers don't work very well on Tri-oil, unless you use some really toxic stuff. I might be better off just sanding it down.

Today was the day to get back on this. I got up this morning and started sanding to get it back to where I started.

I've been thinking about how to do a faux binding and it finally came to me that now would be the best and easiest way to do it. So I taped off the "binding" and sealed it with Tru-oil. I think this will keep the color from bleeding into the "binding" when I do it, but just to be sure I'm going to do another tea wash first. That will tell me all I need to know and will be easy to sand it back down if it doesn't work like I expect.

I don't know how it's going to look, it's not going to show very well on the sides because that's mostly end grain and it's so saturated with oil I'd be days trying to sand it all out and I'm not doing that. I'm not worried about the sides anyway, just how the top looks.

Any color that’s taken in while finishing the top will make that strip stand out a bit more.
