My favorite custom one would say: Bite/Sting ...or else Baby/Baby ...or perhaps Karen/Sharon
But for me, the first thing to come off my SGs was the poker chip.
I prefer one that, like the Tar Baby, "Don't say nuffin' at all."
So I started with a big bronze washer on my faded Brown SG. It cost less than fifty cents.
That did what was needed, and didn't tell me how to play, and wasn't plastic. And I do love to
let good guitarists play my SG... it gives me hope, and let's me admire the tone and the lovely
curves from out front. So it was actually fun to watch a Fender guy try and figure these controls
out. It took him about a minute and a half, of course. And it helped me realize what the perfect
switch washer should be:
Just an indicator, eh? But it says worlds, and is useful and artistic. And it's made of ebony. *grins
The volume knobs above go to 11. As they should.
When I bought my second SG, once again the first mod was to remove the offending plastic piece.
For the Silverburst, I needed a stainless steel washer. It cost a little more than fifty cents, not much.
Looks cool, does the job, fits in with the color scheme, and it isn't plastic. BUT...
I got into an ebony fetish with this guitar, and ended up making the pick guard and the control cover
AND the switch washer out of ebony headstock veneer from Stew Mac. Ebony knobs too, for a while.
But then I relented, and decided that plastic knobs were okay if they went to 11 like the ones
on Luna above, or if they were Witch Hats like I found for April the Silverburst SG here.
Witch hats were in use in the Sixties and early Seventies until replaced by speed knobs for
most '70s SGs. But Witch Hats do my '70s tribute proud IMHO, so they stay.
