Low budget build

[Session 5]

I have a real challenge coming up: a squier 51 body that got damaged (by me ☹), a cort 25.75 inch scale neck , the hardware from an ltd viper, and 2 dogear p90s. Getting all that mess to work together and play in tune, plus putting a decent finish on it and make it look like it belongs together. Whew! I’ll keep y’all updated as it goes. Also have a fretless p bass project that has me pretty stoked. All will be revealed in due time! Stay tuned...

Thank you one and all! If I can get my phone to cooperate, I will attempt a video clip. I’m tech savvy, but not very patient with it.

One thing I didn’t mention: modified neck joint. I got the idea from Yamaha’s Attitude limited 3 bass. One of my shopmates and I made a jig for drilling the holes. Now for the fun part- the angled screws pull the neck solidly into the pocket, mimicking a set neck. The combination of this joint and a Philippine mahogany body give the bass a very deep voice.

In fact, the crazy thing has such a deep voice that I had to change the volume and tone pots from 250k to 500k. And it STILL sings low, but now with a bit more clarity and definition. It was darker than even I prefer and I like ‘em rich and thick!

Update on the bass: I had to put the 250 k harness back in(tone pot died). However, I also put a 1mm shim under the neck heel, which changed the overall geometry, and brought a fair amount of mwah along with a good deal of upper mids And 1/8” action...

That's almost exactly the plan I have except I'm going to dye mine a faded grayish purple after I torch it, then tung oil it. Thats super nice.
