It must be some way special to "smitty_p" but who or what is this sign off photo about?
I'm starting to think I grew up on a different planet to most on this forum :-(

That's a still shot from the movie "Jaws." Just prior to that pic, Police Chief Brody (with the cigarette) has seen the great white shark while chumming the water. In the picture above, Brody has stepped into the cabin of the boat and is saying to Quint (the boat's captain), "You're gonna need a bigger boat." I always got a kick out of that scene, so I just adapted it to read, "You're gonna need a bigger amp."

Here's the clip:

Consider yourself lucky. Many people gave up going in ocean waters for years after watching this movie. Some gave up pools. For most us us who viewed this movie, our attitude toward the ocean was never the same again.

Thanks ... and now I understand.
Jaws was a popular movie even down in Australia back in the late 70's but one that I've never bothered to watch, your little joke went over my head (but no longer).
As a matter of interest, any other members other than this dumb ass not know that?

Lots of things can and will kill ya, sharks don't worry me, when it's your time smile and say goodnight.
Actually I'd rather be shark food than drift away sitting in a wet incontinence pad and not knowing the people that visit me in the home :-(

I liked the original movie okay. But, I didn't care for the sequels. They were pretty cheesy.

I'm glad the signature pic makes sense now!

But, I do change my signature pic from time to time, though not as often as Sp8ctre changes avatars!

Now you have a good excuse to research the movie ;) Lots of good quotes and funky 70's "special" effects in it....

Gasket, you're not the only one missing on some of our USA friend's culture. I don't bother anymore when some of it I don't get or agree with goes by.

I windsurf, but mostly on lakes for the first 5 years I did it. When I first went on the ocean in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina in 1984, I was sure I was fish bait. I never think about it anymore. I figure these beast are well fed and I carry a scary colored 5² meter sail with me.

Hey...I'm replying to myself!

Anyhoo...

As a bit of useless info, most of my signature pics are stills from movie scenes or television shows. Sometimes, I'll quote the scene directly. Other times, as in my Jaws-derived signature pic, I'll make a twist on the quote to carry some music or guitar-related theme.

I always try to keep it light-hearted.

We all gotta go, but being eaten alive sounds particularly horrific. I will pass.

The line "You're gonna need a bigger boat." was an ad lib.
So was the line "I need a vacation." in Terminator 2, also
the entire "Are you talking to me?" scene in Taxi Driver.
He was supposed to just check himself out in the mirror
and leave the room.

...and the pinball machine brain of Tony M. flies off on a tangent.

When I was still surfing, I often shared the water off of Pacifica with gray sharks and the occasional great white. Never had to even bop one on the nose.

Think I'll pass with Jaws.
Moving on to the 80"s ... Gasket's recommendation for a really bad movie that for a strange reason is a must see ...
