Looking For More Punch In YelloStrat:

From your clip, Robert. I hear higher end fuzz type tone. Not much bass in your output? Intentional?

What settings do you run your EQ's at on amp and guitar tone knobs?

I run a very mid-range EQ intentionally. I never alter my amp settings. Guitar knobs are always 100% up, unless I'm soloing, then I might roll the tone back a little, or, I might switch to position #2 to run the bridge/middle out of phase. Generally, I live on the bridge pickup.

Now, in my work with 'Bad Dog,' we play a lot more laid back, so rather than mess with the amp or EQ's, I just roll my volume back to reduce gain. I do not have what you could call a 'clean' amp setting. When a song calls for a clean tone, I just kick off the TS-9 and things clean up dramatically.

Now, look at the pedalboard from a recent live show on November 28, 2020. You may notice I increased the high frequency EQ a little. Remember that 'Bad Dog' has three guitars and things can get pretty heavy in the mix. Rather than add volume, I will often add mid/high EQ to get back out front.

My only issue is when I switch guitars I notice a difference with this one guitar, but when I switch between my (4) other guitars, there are no sonic differences and no nee to change amp/EQ settings. I'm going to run the next two live shows before making any changes...


Robert are your fans or crowd going to hear any differences? Like Ebidis is saying, i think as well you overthink your tone..:)

1) Robert hears a difference.

2) If Robert wasn't overthinking his sound then his mind would wonder elsewhere; possibly, somewhere more dangerous!

Robert is a wonderful and talented guy, and, like the best of them, completely insane! I say that kindly.

I'm going the other way: come on, Robert, pay attention, focus, find that sound. :dood:
 
I have played through Robert’s live rig at Primo sounds, before he switched to the Origin rig, and I found it to be a perfect balance of all one could want, I only wanted to turn up his volume, if he is having any issues, I don’t think he is over thinking it just trying to get what he knows the rig is capable of.

I also don't think Robert is over thinking. HECK, he just built this guitar and is putting it through the paces to see what it can do, and to fine tune it to produce what he wants out of his instruments. Unlike Mitch who has heard Robert's rigs live and in person, and with his own hands on Rob's gear, is as close to being in Robert's shoes as a person can get. Me, I can only listen to recordings and pass on suggestions from 3000 miles away.

As Rob answered in pics and words, HE IS a Set knobs at 11 type a guy, and let whatever subtle changes he makes, come thru his pedals.
I am also aware that Rob plays pretty aggressively, as is evidenced by plectrum wear/damage, and the evidence on his fingertips.
Pick attack and dynamics can play a part in how songs come across, and I am sure Robert is highly skilled in these nuances.

My initial inclination based on what Rob has said about his other guitars and this Yellow Strat came about as I posted the Priest clips. If I were in Robert's shoes and with his tools and gear, I would start by playing a little " control" group experiment. I would outfit my guitars with quick connect wiring mods like alligator clip or male/female connctors and play ol Yellow as is. Then swap out the assembly from Yellow and pull the one in the Jackson or even his original Strat and have a do over of the Yellow with the Other guitar's Pickguard. Then put the the yellow Strat guard in the Jackson and see how it sounds in there. Heck, Also get your best guitar playing band mate, friend, DOnO. Mitch, Chris or someone to play your guitars too and see how they sound with someone else playing them.

This way you can see right off if it is the actual pup(s) Pots, wires etc in the Yellow Guard or is it the Yellow ( wood) influencing things before you spend any more money or time on pup or magnet swaps etc.

No way. It is impossible for an audience, listening to a live band, to perceive any subtle differences in your tone.

These changes are for me. If I LOVE my tone, I play better and more aggressively. When I switch guitars live (mostly just to be sure I am always in tune or sometimes, just for fun) I do not want to have to start re-adjusting my amp.

Robert, I read all yours and gballs and AMS etc posts.

I will only add my shot in the dark .02

Listen to Freaking GLENN TIPTON here. He has EMG's in his HAMER, and I am sure it's not a Plywood guitar. HIS tone is anything but lacking punch or drive.



The thing about EMG active pickups is they will essentially turn any guitar, regardless of shape or wood into their sound. You literally can find and listen to hundreds of videos of EMG Les Pauls, V's, Strats, Explorers and even Teles and they almost sound no different than their counterparts. They are cool pickups and have a distinct aggressive sound, but they overtake the guitar they are used in almost all of the time. Its kinda like passive pickups are the old school Analog sound and Actives are new school digital: you can tweak and mod anything Analog all day long but Digital is a one way ticket and you get what you get

I have been having conversations with one of their tech's and this has gone as far as to actually sending them the sound files from my different guitars and kinda zeroing in on what I am looking for from YelloStrat.

Any thoughts on my "control" testing to see if your existing setup sounds any different in a different axe and vice versa?
