I once had a drunken thought that actually stuck around. I knew of three songs I've heard countless times over the years, but could not for the life of myself, remember where I heard it, who it was by, or even where to start looking. Ear worm songs of mythical status. You can't get rid of them and you don't even know where to find it.
Three songs.
I noticed there was a lot of lore of Death surrounding characters I'd seen in the movies and TV, and it was never something unexpected or sudden. These figures of authority always had some telling sign of when they would die. I thought, what if this was my "lore" to watch for, to sense my certain demise. So, I kept these three songs in my head, and keep careful watch to look out for them, but also, not dig too deep for them as well.
The first song hit me about five years ago. I recall vividly that I was sitting with my laptop, chatting on a forum, not much unlike this one but with more gain. A person posted one of his king-of-the-hill bands and I had to click play on the video to, you know, judge him. The first note hadn't even begun to decay into reverb when it hit me, this was song number one. The first song that I had heard many, many times, but I could not remember any of the details. Instantly I'm not sitting on my couch, I'm sitting on a friends floor. The VHS buzzing with the movie "Singles" flowing through the reels. The song was "She Sells Sanctuary" by The Cult.
The second. Almost a moment ago. Doom scrolling through Reddit posts and I see an old timey band for some odd reason. What is this? A click second later and I'm watching these old guys in the 60's playing what I would call a modern day Dirge. I recognize the voice and the familarity of a 60's song, but nohting else. For some reason, I'm really digging this band. The lead singer has something about him that just captivates. Youtube here I come. A few typos and a couple of clicks, I'm listening song by song. I'm digging it, band sounds cool, go on to the next song. I start doing chores listening and then when I'm not quite paying attention, something clicks. I stop and listen. There's the chorus I didn't know I was looking for. A familiar favorite and the second secret I've been looking for. The song was Paint it Black by The Animals.
The third song continues to allude. I'm hoping for a long, long time to come since, for some reason, I think I'm a kung-fu or fatherly master that people are depending on.
btw, written and posted in a very enebriated state of multiple fronts.
