Les Paul Tone:

Randy was dead when Marshall released that amp

Yes. he was, unfortunately. When I used to visit his Mom, she had binder of his amp and effect settings, including all the spec's on his "Chip Pan." She was kind enough to let me take the binder to a Kinko's and copy it in 2002. It was one of many things I lost in a divorce...

I've played three bursts, plus a bunch of 54-57 goldies. They were good guitars, as all Les Pauls are, but nothing struck me as being worth the hype. I do agree with you though - play what you like, whatever makes the sounds you dig. I know they are revered and there has got to be a reason beyond just the rarity, but it escapes me personally. I guess I am better off that way since I can actually afford to buy the ones that I really want and am not chasing an unattainable ideal! Rock on man
Thanks for the insight, gball.

That would be the heaviest one I have ever run across. I owned a '77 that was a tick over 12 pounds, and I have have heard of a few Recordings and The Les Pauls that were in the 13 pound range but I have never heard of one close to 15 before. My '79 SB is 11.3 pounds.

We didn't believe the bathroom scale, so I had a friend bring his postal scale over. Everyone was stunned...

These two P90 SGs, with Gibson pickups that read about the same with a multimeter, sounded very different from each other...note the pickup placement.

Derail...I LOVE those Kustom Amps! My uncle, who is 8 years older than me and was in a band when I was a kid had one of those and a Les Paul Custom.
That right there is one of the big reasons I kept pursing playing until it stuck!

I've been planning a LPC Black beauty build for a while...just need the right husk.

I already have a set of brand new gold Grover/Gibson Keystones, Gold Plated Aluminum Faber Tailpiece, Gold Plated Brass Jackplate and a few other odds and ends...all brand new...just waiting...

I was talking with a colleague and he is acquainted with a fellow down here that deals in Gibson husks. Rumor is he has a Black beauty in husk form...I guess you know this will probably go....

That would be cool. Don't think I have ever seen a Custom husk. You don't see a whole lot of Custom Shop guitars stripped down for parts, y'know. Hope that works out for you.

There's a collector down here and he always has odd stuff in his shop. I saw a LPC husk on his wall last year and he explained that it had been stripped out because he didn't like how a section of the binding was crooked. At the time, he had an R8 that was also a husk...

Whatever floats it I guess.

Actually, do you know what year the LPC is? They switched Custom production from USA to Custom Shop in 2011. They are identical except for the neck profiles - the CS ones are a touch thicker. I played a Wine Red one over the weekend that made me weep it was so nice, but just a bit too much money for me to take home right now.

Sounds like a nice one!!!

I didn't take it down off the hanger, but it's said to be a 2000 era LPC. It looked perfect to me. Thicker necks - that's my only disappointment on my 2016 Gibson Les Paul Studio - it's a slim taper - but the neck may be more of a preference than a necessity...
