I've played them before. They are sweet as hell, but TBH I could never get past the looks or the goofy monkey-grip thing. But man, they play and sound as good as you would expect from a Vai signature instrument.
He says in the video he came up with the Monkey Grip just so no one could copy his Signature Guitar without getting caught straight out!
And I applaud him for doing it, but personally I just can't get over it for some reason!! My own issues.
The white on white is almost there for me looks-wise, but just misses the mark to my eye:

One thing though if you are interested in these - the neck are shredders, wide and thin. They take a little getting used to but like most thin necks you can really get going on them once you get used to it.
I completely understand what you are saying and I agree. Add to it the bright colors on some and the floral on others and it almost makes you not want one...a few nearly match my upholstery covered
amps and speaker cabs though!
It's not just the Gem though. I played one of these and loved it:

But no getting past that form factor for me I fear.
I really wanted one of those! Almost jumped on it, but I'm not sure about the mini-hums...
I'm a very big fan of mini-hums. I have three Firebirds after all.
For me, it was mostly the way the body felt when playing it. The neck is a freaking work of art all by itself but the body killed it for me.
I need to play one. My wife is going to Korea at the end of the month and I'll have time to go hang out in Hollywood. There are plenty of guitar stores to
hang out in. I also need to make an unaccompanied trip to Norm's. The wife was with me last time and I felt rushed!
...Does anyone own one or has anyone played one? They have always interested me, but I've never seen one in person.
And yes, I discovered the video is two years old.
