Soooo...

It’s been a week and a half since this concert and the impact hasn’t subsided.

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert I posted about earlier was tremendously exciting, but this Eric Johnson show...man...it has me rethinking everything.

I’m not trying to copy his rig or setup, but his approach to generating his sound ... which I LOVE ... really has me rethinking things.

I really like his tone and unique approach to things. I’ve been buying his albums on iTunes and binge listening as much as I can.

Here’s where things are now...

The Mesa purchase I’ve discussed? It’s on hold for now...maybe to be taken off the table all together.

My guitars? I think I’m fine where I am. I think one Fender Stratocaster and one Gibson Les Paul will get me 90% of what I need. Maybe a Gibson SG will be good, too.

Oddly, I have no interest in any other brands. So, I think I’m good on the guitar front, for now.

My amps and general rig? This is where I need to rethink things.

I’m certainly not trying to copy Eric. But, good ideas are where you find them. It was both inspiring and revolutionary to my thinking to see such tone and sound coming from equipment ranging between 30 and 50 years old.

That sounds like pretty much everything I own. I just need to play with it more often, and practice, practice, practice......

Mine are not old, but the 2 different rigs I enjoy playing, I am fine with.
It doesn’t stop the want, but I also need to practice practice practice.
Cheers

I rarely have time for anything else now. Beem working on the vibrato during bends. I felt I was decent already, but I've gotten a ton better at it this past week or so. Makes me rethink about what else I might need to relearn.
I need to break out the 5 natural minor patterns and rehash them some more , because I am forgetting parts, it was also a song tool, because I would go off course and start running riffs , lol

He basically plays the most expensive gear known to man.

Well, yes and no.

Of course, I certainly wouldn't say his gear was ever "cheap", but I'd say the vintage era amps he plays are very pricey now, mostly due to their age. But, they certainly aren't unique. His pedal board isn't populated with anything especially unique, either. Actually, it's fairly commonplace stuff, and some things he assembled himself. He does have a few other things back by his amps that I was unable to photograph. He did used to play Dumbles. But the latest understanding I have is that he only has one left, and he's taken to using a Two Rock, instead. This is a rather expensive amp (about $3500.00 for the head), but he's had most of his rig for the past 30 years or more and put it together before the pieces had achieved the collector or really high-value status they have today.

My thought isn't to reproduce his rig or exactly copy his tone. I'm more contemplating how I can implement a similar concept to get what I want to get.

He

He doesnt take much of it on tour anymore since it's all vintage now and starting to break down. His Virginia strat is a 54, his LP burst is a 59, his 335 is a 64. He has one of the first ever Dumbles, a Fender reverb tank that was worked on by Leo. Some of his Fender amps are modded by Dumble. And a host of Echoplexes which is one of his secret sauces, he pretty much uses them for the preamp only now.

His gear is way pricey.

Unfortunately, Eric doesn’t have his ‘54 “Virginia” anymore. In a couple recent interviews I watched he recalls how he fell on it and ended up selling it. Apparently, they could never quite get the tone back, so he decided to get rid of it. He did say he regrets it!

Too bad, really.
