Joint Venture14watt 6CM6 High Gain amp build

Afternoon all, I have started a third amp build, something that's "out of the box thinking" for me, and somewhat new. A 14watt 6CM6 (small 9 pin version of a 6V6) is the power section, fixed bias, and that gets coupled to a stock Marshall style 2203 preamp, up through the PI. Chassis is a Modulus, PT is Hammond., OT and Choke are ClassicTones. One of the new wrinkles for me is I'm using a PCB for the first time.

The non-populated PCB came from Headfirst out of AU ( I have no affiliation with them), same with the FX loop board. The PCB board is well built. It's layout offers many options that can be built off of it such as a 1959 or 1987 model, or a 2203, or even a JTM or a Bassman could be configurated on it. Traces are thick, board footprint is well laid out, and with some thinking you can use traditional can caps if you don't want to use radial caps.

I'm using all of the good stuff and will build the amp complete, in playable form. After that point, the amp gets sent off to another builder for High Gain mods. When he is done with it will be up for grabs.

Yesterday I took the Modulus small box amp chassis and drilled and knocked out all of the non-stock layout holes. Today I mounted most everything to see how it fits, pictures below of both tasks. Rectifier is S.S. with the main reservoir a 50uF, screens also a 50uF ( dual can cap), and 33uf radial on board caps from the PI through preamp. I have not decided the cosmetics of plate colors or head box size and color.

I'll introduce the second builder when the time is right. Pics below.

Cool,,, & a good start on the project. Nice choice of power tubes too. 6V6 type power tubes sound great with these circuits, so the 6CM6's could be expected to too. Still pretty easily available as NOS/NIB too. If you can find them, might I suggest some RCA black plates. Board looks decent quality. I've use Modulus chassis's for a few projects, they're also decent. One good thing is Modulus usually have a headcab to suit too. What are you intending to do about faceplates? Look forward to seeing more of the build. Cheers

Ivan, Thanks, and I have used the 6CM6's before. The first attempt wasn't great, but after I found the right plate voltage they are great. And as you say also fairly cheap for NOS glass.

This is the first try with using one of the Headfirst boards. So far they seem very good quality. I usually have the plates made by Sandy at Precision Design in Indiana. Hope she is still in business.
