JANAD!

Seems pretty good so far. I am finding I like the sound better with the master volumes all the way up and just using the channel volumes for control. Seems more full that way. I have started playing with preamp tubes. I played for a couple hours stock and then put a Mullard in V1, Sovtek in V2, Gold Lion in V3 and Electro Harmonix in V4. All new reissue tubes. The noise level was better with these and the Mullard in V1 took out a bit of the brightness which I like.

Next, I put a vintage GE 5751 in V1. That didn't work. No volume on the clean/crunch channel and didn't change the OD channel in any kind of a good way. So right now I have the Mullard back in V1 and am trying the GE 5751 in V2. This seems to drop just enough of the overdrive on the OD1/2 channel to keep it from breaking up so much when the gain is cranked to the max. Clean channel is back to normal and sounds good.

I really like being able to switch the loop completely out of the mix. The resonance control is a nice addition. The reverb is okay. It doesn't do anything special, but I have a HOF in the loop anyway. Definitely sounds like a giant brother of my DSL1 with more sounds available. I'm playing through my Greenback filled A cab and Greenback/V30 filled B cab. These cabs sound good with this head. It doesn't always work that way. Back to more testing.

Just swapped another new Mullard back into V2 and didn't care for the overdrive. Went back to the GE 5751. I like that alot. Now I swapped the Mullard out of V1 for a vintate GE 12AX7. WAY better. The clean channel sounds much more natural and the crunch side of it is great. Before I didn't really care for it. Sounds more organic now, or some such nonsense. I'm going to cannibalize some of my other amps for preamp tubes. I want to try vintage for the PI at least.

I put vintage GE 12AX7s in V3 and V4 as well. It seems to make a difference. I think it is going to stay this way. Sounds way better than it did with the stock tubes. Less noise, less fizz and more natural.

I find this new amp quite capable of low volume level playing. I've been running the masters on 10 and just adjusting volume with the main volume controls. So if you roll back the main volume to around 1 you can then roll back the master until it gets really quiet. Oh, and run on half power as well. It still sounds decent like this and my wife can sleep while I play through 2 x 412s.
