It's all about the Rrrrrriiiffffffss!

So I did a little thing.... Sold my SG (to one of my students who has been begging me to sell it to him for over a year)...... and I bought another satin LP.
This one's a 2014 (120th anniversary) LPJ. Which means no pickguard, no binding, and a Maple neck. This one is a 50"s carve as well. Pickups are 61 zebras. I'm going to be changing them out soon. Not heavy enough.

It's used, but it's pretty dang mint.
I yanked the strings off, Lem-oiled the board, installed Straploks, trying out a Top Wrap for the first time with beefy slinky's. Tuned straight C#

Here's my first ten minutes with it.

Seems a bit on the bright side for a Paul. I'm sure it's the top wrap, the maple neck and these pickups.
Going to probably stick a black winter and 59 combo in it next week.

Looks and sounds great brother

Thanks, today I intonated it, it was waaaay out of whack. Sounds a million times better now.

I took it to rehearsal tonight to hear it in our mix. It actually sounds great with the stock pups. It's not as harmonic as I'd like though, it's going to get a Duncan in it.... I just can't be playing stock pickups ha ha ha... Trying to decide between white with black hexed invaders, or maybe a black winter, 59 combo.

Always liked my invader, have never tried a black winter.
I have another Strat build that I have not touched in some time that has a white one in, maybe I need to get off my ass an finish 089180E3-3245-4777-B3BB-206ABD4C4B0B.jpeg

Black Winter is really an SH-6 Distortion that's a little bit upgraded.. same build and character. And the SH6 is my favorite (passive) pickup for Metal.

I love Duncan Distortions, and the Duncan Designed versions too (had both at one point in nearly identical guitars and couldn't tell the difference at all). Had a Black Winter for about a month and couldn't get rid of this super irritating upper mid-range thing it had going on. So, I sold it and went back to Distortions. The other pups I've tried (and still own) that are far more along the lines of the DD to my ears are the Elysian Trident IIs and the Solar Duncans.

But, there's so much more to the sound we get than just the pups, which is what makes tone chasing so much fun.

Agreed, tone chasing can be so fun! And so danged expensive! Ha ha.
Sometimes the perfect pickup sounds like crap in another guitar.

I've had a million pups wired in over the years, I've never met an SH6 I didn't like.

Totally agree. And, to that point, the stuff I loved through my Helix, doesn't quite do the same with my Axe FX, and vice versa.

Very cool guitar and it sounds awesome! Sensed a lil Jake E Lee in there too!

Ha ha ha I forgot the BOOM!

Getting cold out in the garage, I pussed out and played in the living room tonight.
1) my morning need to listen to some good riffage is satisfied. Great playing.
2) nice tree! Very festive. Which reminds me, I still haven’t put mine up.
3) that was a nice wind up on that throw. Was that a knuckleball? A slider? Did you clock how fast that pitch was? Pretty sure it was outside the strike zone though. lol

Ha ha, 92 mph, right down the pipe!
It's a lot slower since the shoulder rebuild.
