It might get loud down here

Or, you may be able to hear me in New England from where you're at...

Over the past few months, I found a few things on my long term list of amps I wanted to get to round out my collection. Then, I'd start weeding out what I don't use anymore, or have no desire to keep.

Unfortunately, three of those things came along in very quick succession and I have been spending way too much money on toys. In December, my friend who runs Mad Oak Studios in Boston decided that he would sell their '72 Hiwatt DR103 100 watt head. Since I was getting an X-mess bonus, I figured why not grab it? It's a close enough match to my '71 Hiwatt SE4122 speaker cab. It is also a great sounding amp, and has been used on various stuff coming out of Mad Oak for years.

Next up, is a '78 Marshall 1960A cab in Fawn tolex with the original 25 watt "Black Back" Celestions. They are all dated September of '78. I had been on the search for about ten years to find one that I could afford to go with my Fawn '78 JMP. This one was a private sale in Wisconsin. I bought it when I was out there for work. I was able to keep it at my company's office in Milwaukee for a few weeks until my wife could arrange air freight through the airline she works for. I also had to get a flight case. It figures that it was the first time I could not find one on Craigslist. Luckily the one I bought came with free shipping, so off to the office it went.

Last, but not least is a '72 Marshall 1960B Bass Lead cabinet. I really wanted a 1982B to match my 1982A cab, but this one is in almost museum condition. It has 25 watt "Green Backs" with April '72 date codes, and are 75 Hz. The 1982 has 55 Hz speakers. That's why I was holding out for one of those. It sounds great. Over the weekend, I had it plugged in with my '73 Marshall 1987 50 Watt JMP Super Lead.

So, now it's time to unload some '87 2551A Silver Jubilee speaker cabs, and maybe my '86 Hiwatt Lead 100R made by Turntone in England.

Gratuitous photos, because you love them so much.

Thanks Don. I usually use the 100 watt amps at the bass player's house when we rehearse. He uses an Acoustic 300/360 rig into a 6 x 12" speaker cab. The drummer is also a heavy hitter who will not play less than 100%, so a small amp is never an option.

Most gigs we do, I get to use a 50 watt. That's why I was so excited to get the Fawn cabinet. That's the head I use most since it has a master volume circuit. My JTM 45 reissue is a much better sounding amp, but is much louder. I do like to use the JTM 45 and the 8 x 10 at home. I don't get as crazy as I would like to with it, but it really does sound amazing at any volume. The owner of the Marshall Museum in Germany told me that was always Jim Marshall's favorite combination.

Then some gigs, I just use a Deluxe Reverb or my DST30 (AC30 clone).
