It’s Official! I’m Ampless!

Yup! It’s official.

As of yesterday afternoon, i no longer have any guitar amps! Now relying solely on my HeadRush Gigboard and FRFR powered cabinets.

My last amp went out the door in a trade for an Eastman SB59 LP-type guitar. It was a Ceriatone 2202 hand-wired JCM800 clone with custom head enclosure and matching 1x12 cab. It was great but it sat in my basement unused.

I feel ya.

I still have a few amps, but I literally have not plugged in a single one of them in over two years.

I normally use my Helix run straight to the mix. I do have a nice powered mains speaker I can use if I ever need to push my own sound from a stage.

So, whereas I am not truly amp-less, I generally operate that way.

Smitty, I leave a powered cab at the rehearsal space and I have one at home. I find it so easy to just take my HeadRush and guitar and go. Compact and light and no roadie needed!
On the odd instance we play out, i use the powered cab as a stage monitor and go direct to PA with the main signal.

I need a speaker behind me. Just for fun and for feedback etc. Gotta have that at minimum. Straight to mix doesn't work for me. But the downsizing of the rigs is absolutely a big positive!

That's where buying a good powered speaker comes into play. Personally, I do like running direct to the mix, but I completely understand the viewpoint you've mentioned.

A person could run a processor (whatever the make) into the speaker, just like running a pedal board to an amplifier. The speaker will provide that on-stage sound. But, because it's not a guitar amp speaker, it won't color the sound nearly to the degree that a traditional guitar amp speaker will. So, the nuances of the patches can be preserved. For me, I did not worry too much about buying a true FRFR amp and speaker. I happened to like the sound of my patches through the mains speaker we used in my old band. So, I decided to buy one of those. Granted, for me, having this speaker is really a "just in case" sort of thing. I normally don't use it. But, using something like a Helix, I could run direct to the mix from one output and simultaneously run another output to my powered speaker for on-stage sound, should I ever want to. Alternatively, I could run direct to the speaker, and use the loop-thru on the speaker to run to the mix. Either way, I wouldn't even need to mic the speaker.

Now, having said this, I don't want to be mistaken as proselytizing people away from their amplifiers or more traditional rigs. I have my way of doing things and it works well for me. But, others prefer a more traditional board and amp setup. That's totally fine. What's important is that people are comfortable with and can make music with the approach they've chosen.

Perhaps someday I may lean more heavily on my Kemper. It sure would/does make recording much easier, but I do like the old “amp interaction” that my amps offer. I do love my little Greta, and my Valve Jr isn’t too shabby either(especially with pedals on the Jr), for their touch sensitivity. The Kemper has a bit of that, but it’s kinda like there’s a glove interfering with that touch feel.

My Antelope audio interface with software has 10 DSP amps that sound like the amps one is a 75 watt Park I own the real
Marshall Park 75 sounds like the real amp Now I want to clone my Green Hornet ODS amp for my friend Randy
so I can just mail a loaded unit to him with my amp sounds with a I phone or a I pad you have access to 64 loaded amps

The Kabinet fixed that for me.
