Is tone in the hands, or the pedals?

My personal experience. My youngest picks any one of my electrics. Tweaks the pedals. Tweaks the amp. Plays. In my mind I’m going….. so that’s what it’s supposed to sound like. He hands me the guitar. Changing nothing. I still sound like crap.

For me, that answers the question.

I was asked once to fill in on a commercial recording project ($300/hour rate) where the guitarist literally stormed out of the studio in mid-song.

I listened to the first half of his work, got the tone, then ran through it a couple of times to cop his style and feel, then added a seamless end to that recording....

I don't believe you..

What I do…. I do decent. As I’ve said before, I like to listen to the hard stuff. I can’t play it and make it sound right. I do tend to play clean. Probably due to spending so many years playing acoustic only. As long as I keep things to a touch of delay and chorus…. It sounds okay.
