OR is it a legitimate GRIPE about a beloved product?????

YES -- Im BITCHING about GIBSON again .... my BELOVED 2014 LPJ has begun to show wear (to be fair Ive had it only a couple months) on the edge where my forearm rubs as I play
(apparently the P.O. never played it --- or played without TOUCHING the body (??) -- its almost impossible to photograph because its RIGHT on the edge so the flash and light make it hard to capture ....

again 2014 model........ Ive owned many matte finish guitars...I have "natural" finish gutiars from the 80's ......taht are not suffering the same fate
and they have been "played in" by far....3 examples here.........

I ahve played the SNOT out of these ---for years....... not wearing at the edges........

anyone else experience this with a Gibbo?

anyone want to explain why I should not be a bit disappointed in Gibson for this ??

I love the guitar the play, the tone, the comfort... all stellar all make me smile ---

but -- here we are again ---WTF GIBSON ...... why is a 37 year old PEAVEY capable of HOLDING its finish and the Gibbo cant???

The cheap, non gloss, satin finish is a big part of meeting the price point on the entry level Gibson guitars.
If you’re a player, and you like the relic look, these will easily get there in short order….without the Gibson custom shop VOS treatment, or the Fender custom shop price…roll your own.
If you want to pay for a mildly protective finish, step up to a Studio(non-faded) or a Standard…

I do know the drill though….

Those finishes were specifically designed to wear quickly. It was considered a 'selling point' for people that wanted an ultra-thin nitro finish without the clearcoat, precisely because they wear through so fast. I had an SGJ that I owned for about three years and I took the finish all the way off the neck in a stripe where my thumb rubbed and also on the body where my arm rubbed it. I thought it looked pretty cool, but TBH I doubt I would buy one with that finish again.

Worst finish I ever had though was a Custom Shop Stratocaster, with full gloss nitro It was a maple 'board one, and the finish popped off of one of the position dots within a couple of weeks of owning it, and the clarcoat rubbed off the upper bout within a year. It also always had weird smudges in the color coat.

I guess my "bitch" is how fast its occurring .....I "assumed" the thinner finish would wear after several YEARS not 6-8 WEEKS
I agree…there are a few different types of the Gibson entry/satin/faded finish. Some seem to hold up better than others. With heavy mileage, my 2003-06 faded cherry guitars show light wear for the trip they’ve been on. My 2011 faded special seems pretty solid, just some light wear…but it is a natural finish, and you have to really look for any imperfections. The 2012+ faded paint job guitars(the ones with nitro color, but no clear) showed shop wear when they were “brand new” in the stores….those were the ones like yours, the 2012-14 ”tribute” line etc.

As you know, I love that guitar and I hope you hang onto it. Why not pull the hardware and give it a single coat of poly? That will do it for a very long time

I do love it -- its a KEEPER -- and I may just give it the ol @Hackmaster special "protection" treatment -- this folks is a GLoss (and heavily modded) SGJ of the same 2014 vintage that crawled from the bowels of Hacks Lil SHop of Horrors ;)

for the record also a FOOGIN "KEEPeR"

I hadda look back. The Lzzy Hale is black with white binding.
I used it for 3 full 3 hr shows plus
one 1.5 hr plus a video shoot for one afternoon..
I rotate 2 or 3 guitars each show but it got likely more than half the time at each show. I practiced once or twice with it but never really played it much at home. This is since late 2017.

It has signs where the white seems faded where my arm rests on it. How many hours is that play time?
Likely about 8. ??
The custom shop has definite dull spots in that area as well. Glossy nitro finish.
My old Goya from 1978 with the poly finish has some real wear there, but it should!! The back has worming but hasn't even worn the finish through! Was the only guitar I had for many years and is now 43 years old.

Well, that's it then. Inbox me for my shipping address. I'll deal with it. ;)

Ok,

I purchased (5) new Gibson guitars between 2016 and 2017. All were the "Faded" finish variants, except for the 2016 Studio T which was lacquer.

All except the Studio T exhibited extremely fast wear.

Conversely, the Lacquer finish on my 2021 Les Paul 50's Standard seems impervious to wear...FWIW

Well -- I do love the guitar -- its not going anywhere (sorry guys) however IMHO a 900.00 guitar (Gibson) should hold up better than the 300.00 burst peavey pictured above that it is almost 4 decades old ...... I would THINK ....
that falls in line with the "pay more get better" mantra many talk about doesnt it ??..... I paid more ... finish wise I didnt get "better" ...didnt even get "as good"

The Gibbo only has a thin lacquer finish (maybe not even pore-filled) and the Peavey has a heavier poly finish.

In this case, the cheaper finishing method is actually the more durable of the two.
