Incoming Compression depression

well Grump-- I too have usually sold-- or INCLUDED in with a guyitar sale to sweeten the deal most every pedal Ive ever owned. Post 15 -- and a CHANGE in my method of use-- netted GREAT gains for the JOYO pedal-- which is now out of the drawer and got a looong work out last night....for the princely cost of FREE if the Behringer can introduce me to a new way-- perhaps I will look into a BETTER compressor-- time will tell.
 
I've had my Boss CS-3 since the early 1990's. I use it fairly conservative by Most standards. I don't want a signal boost when I kick it on. I just want the volume balance.

I can look at a waveform in Pro-Tools or Audacity or whatever and 'see' when a compressor is being used.

Now using one to get certain tones or as a lead boost I have not tried....
 
After watching a few more vids on compressors I indeed hear a significant change with the JOYO attack knob turned to at least 2-3:00.
At reasonably loud - watching a loud action movie or listening to stereo speakers loud enough to fill the room decently - it is knowable and usable.

Both clean and with gain I think I am starting to understand this.

My initial shakedown runs of the pedal were at pretty low volumes. not conversation level but pretty low.
 
For me, the compressor is set correctly when you can engage it and hear no change in signal level. Some guys use it as a boost and it squeals like mad when kicked on.
 
Im trying to BALANCE the level control to match the amps output--- and messing mostly with the attack control-- trying to decide WHERE I like it

Im enjoying this one more than the last one (Which was some Magic Mushroom I got from Hackmaster-- I didnt really give it a good shot I tried it for 5 minutes went MEH and passed it on----) probably woulda loved the shroom had I give it half a chance--

it is a SUBTLE thing ---

I am NOTICING though-- with the COMPRESSION ON -- the VOLUME knob on the GUITAR becomes WAAAAAY more "interesting" tone wise-- not JUST for loud or quiet---

I like tube compression when mixing recorded tracks in a studio. I've never really liked the sound of compression from pedals. Even though I have a very nice compressor, it rarely gets used. I'm hoping that a friend of mine does go ahead with buying a Dry-Bell Unit 67 compressor. If he does, I may get to try it out. I think that would satisfy my compressor "tastes" more than others.

Day 2 ----Im using it with (of course) the MESA - -however -- Sysco and gball have freighted me into thinking I have possibly destroyed it by buying JJ's tubes--- so I am contemplating using the pedal with the Panama head this evening --- give the Mesa a rest---
 
No need for depression about compression. ;) Follow Goldmember's Compressor Rule #1: No more than 3 to 1 ratio,
and gently adjust threshold for no more than 2-5 db reduction. I do that with guitar and bass, and even less
when mixing and mastering. Dig it and proceed.

And...
