In the cellar, or somewhere

Wicked F-ing Pissah! Today I received a phone call from the Massachusetts Div. of Unemployment. It seems the company I worked for is not registered with the IRS or any of the 50 states as having ever paid unemployment taxes for it's employees. It will be a two month battle before I see an unemployment check, if I'm lucky. Mass. will end up paying me after the appeals process, then hunt them down in court for reimbursement and fines.

Also, my previous job emailed me to say they were only looking for help in the Pennsylvania region, even though it says otherwise on the website. Probably a kind way to say piss-off.

I have an interview Wednesday, and one more in the works. My stress level is off the charts. Regardless of how positive and kind I've tried to treat people, I seem to be getting bitten pretty hard right now. Got to keep the chin up.

Damn it man --- how do these companies get away with that crap-- you need to PUSH for them to put the SCREWS to whoever has been POCKETING the $ -- you got a cehck stub showing they TOOK taxes out of your pay then that is flat out FRAUD and tax evasion--
some HEADS need to ROLL!@

Sorry to here that John, shitty way to let someone go. More free time is always nice, I have had 2 pay cuts over the past couple years as the drilling moves back down south or out west. Still have a good job after 9 years but money is tighter now and could be gone tomorrow :(

How does a company get away with that in this day and age. Damn John, that sucks. When the dust settles make sure you put the screws to them.

That's tough John and sorry to hear. I would personally jump on the job offer from your old boss with the attitude only a few years left. I had to quit work because of my health but having to quite work was harder on me than my health issues. Hang in there man....

Wow! Sorry to hear this, John! Something must be pretty screwed up in the system for this to be possible to happen... I really, really hope things turn out for the better real soon.

Thanks everyone. Today seemed to go well. I had a two hour interview. While taking a short field service exam, I could hear the service manager call his boss and tell him I'm a good candidate (and he would call him back later to discuss later). Before I left, he said that I should call him back in a few days to see if his boss would fly to Mass. for an interview with me, or I would fly to Chicago. They are full for CNC Mill techs, but need two EDM guys right away. I told him I would be more than happy to learn EDM machines. One of the former service coordinators at an old job works for that company now, and gave me a very good word. As well as one of their techs who I've met at training and in the field, and he just happened to be at the office today.

Tomorrow, I have another interview. From what I've been told, if either of these companies are trying to get me in the door for interviews, they must be serious. Normally, they take months to make things happen.

So, here's an update....

Last Tuesday, I had an interview with one company. They are based in Switzerland, and their regional tech center is about an hour and a half from me in central Mass. They are full with techs for their milling machines, even though my five axis background impressed them. They made the time to interview me to see if I was interested in EDM machines. Which, I am. They normally have a three interview protocol, so I was told I would get #2 in the next week or so.

So, Wednesday I drive just over the border into New Hampshire for another interview with a German/Japanese company. They need someone real bad who understands five axis mill/turn CNC machines. I also have a background in Mitsubishi CNC controls (which their Japanese machines have), and Heidenhain and Siemens controls (which their German made machines have) which was a major plus. I also can read, write, and speak German, which was another feather in my cap. It seems that after the merger, they did not have enough people that understood five axis machining or the German made controls and electrical cabinets.

That company also has a three interview protocol, but they bypassed it and gave me an offer on Friday. I accepted it yesterday, and now I'm dealing with all the paperwork. Since when do free countries make you take a drug test? Oh yeah, we're not free. But that's beside the point. I start next Tuesday. It's the shortest time I've ever been unemployed. Lay off to offer, was less than a month. Start date will be a little over a month.

Until I actually start, I still don't believe it. There's still a week to go.

Enjoy sir! (y)Congrats on the new gig!
The drug testing is a bummer, but the norm....these days.

Great to hear! I hope you love the job!

Thanks. The job is not necessarily "Miss Right", but more "Miss Right Now." I shouldn't complain because they promise I'll be home everyday 90% of the time, with only small areas of regional travel. Maine being the furthest (with no complaints). It also comes with a large pay raise and company car. Also, since the tech center is close by, it does offer other opportunities later.

Congrats John -- well done!!!

Drug tests are S.O.P. now days -- if your on payroll and will be getting insurance-- or are covered by workmens comp etc. -- you gotta do it . Its ALL C.Y.A. in duh U.S.A> ;)

Hey, great news, John! Seems things will work out fine for you. Hopefully you will actually like the job as well.

Good news John ! The economy is booming as I have a hard time finding engineers in my field.
