Impulse Buys

How much of your gear is or was an impulse buy? Do you still have it or wish you still did? Which impulse purchases did you love and which ones did you regret?

For me it was:

Guitars:
1) Schecter 006 Elite....loved it, sold it and regret it
2) Schecter C1 FR....didn't like it enough to justify having it, sold it
3) Schecter C1 Classic....loved it, sold it but don't regret it
4) Fender EVH crop circle...thought it was cool, never really jived with it, sold it, no regrets

Amps:
The only amp I ever bought on impulse was a Fender Vibro Champ XD
Love it, still have it, will never sell it

I think most of my stuff could be considered an “impulse buy”, as I’m not ever really in the pursuit of something. Usually, I’ll be offered or find something interesting.

Then, my brain will start with stuff like:
Do I have something like this?
Does it fill a hole in type of stuff I have?
Can I use it for anything I’m working on now?
Do I have cash on hand?

It’s rare that I hunt something specific. The ‘72 Marshall Super Bass 4 x 12 B cabinet was a rare exception. My Burny SG was another, as it was intended for transmogrification. It just ended up different than what was planned.

TBH, far, far too much gear over the years was bought on impulse, and it's all gone except one: My '79 Silverburst Les Paul Custom was totally an impulse buy - I walked in the shop, saw it, knew immediately I was buying it. May not be a true, full impulse buy though, as I had wanted one since they first came out in '79 and it just took me decades to actually get ahold of one.

One thing sticks out though that was an impulse buy and I wish I had kept it: a Marshall Studio 15. That was one of the best-sounding amps I ever had and a really nice size and power level.

Still have most of my stuff. It’s rare that I sell anything. I was really pissed off when I had to sell my Rudolf Schenker Flying V (one of 100 made), as it was signed by him and Uli Roth. I still won’t forgive my wife for that sale. Three nice old guitars went dirt cheap on short notice.

Yeah, I've seen a studio 15 before on ebay....are those tube or solid state? Dude wanted a pretty penny for it if I remember correctly

1993 model. I believe that 103 were made, all signed by Rudi at the factory. Went to see Uli, and brought the pickguard hoping to get it signed. It was a trip hanging with him. Very nice guy, and very funny. He was surprised to have me start the conversation in German, with a proper dialect. Great night, and I really wish I still had that guitar.

Curious, 12 bar. We have at least 3 other Schecter players in here. 2 have the Hellraiser FR's, and one has a ........................
How exactly are the 006 Elite, and C1's different than one another and even the Hellraiser, as mostly I see the same basic shape,. a Floyd or not, or of course different Pickups or Trim niceties.

I've never had or played a Hellraiser, but the 006 elite had a weird shaped horn on it, not full like a c1. It also had hot EMG designed pickups in it, single in the neck and humbucker in the bridge (but not active like an EMG)

It was part of the older diamond series

yesterday i ordered a tiny 65 mini twin 2x3" battery powered amp for absolutely no reason.

Yes! I'd make that impulse buy every time. I bought one of those mini joe satriani amps one year thinking it will sit on the shelf, look cool and never get played.

That summer it was 106 flippin degrees and we didn't have power for 3 days....
suddenly that js mini was my new favorite amp!

They were tube, don't remember the complement. 15 watts, with either a Celestion G-12 or a Greenback (depending on the year I think - mine had the G-12) and it had a balanced direct out which was pretty unusual at the time. It got into some serious old-school Marshall grind at relatively modest volume, took pedals like a champ, and the XLR out sounded great into a board. Marshall is seriously delinquent in not reissuing these amps, I and lot of other people would get one immediately. The used market has gotten ridiculous for them, you're right.

I don't impulse buy, but I make up my mind very quickly.

I've only let 2 guitars go. 1988 black Les Paul standard that was a forced sale and I deeply regret it. Then I gave my 1968 SG to my brother. It was right handed, but still totally stupid. I only paid $200 for it. I could get that for the trem assembly alone.
