I suck at playing the guitar

And I’m sick of it. I’ve been playing for nearly 60 freaking years, and I’ve spent TWO MONTHS trying to nail this jazz progression and can’t do it at tempo. I’m so fed up with my own playing I could puke, and it seems impossible to get better. I’m too old to develop new brain pathways, and I’m not happy with the way I play. Truth is, I never have been. I’m tried of pushing this rock uphill. I’m done.

So long, ya’ll. It’s been good to know you.

I’ve been at it for 50. The fact you’re attempting to learn a jazz progression puts you a better player than I am. So I understand the sentiment. I just keep plugging away and have fun. There’s one song I’ve been playing for 20+ years. To this day, I haven’t been able to play it mistake free. In fact, I can’t even play it the same twice in a row. Decided a long time ago, I only need to amuse myself.

That is understandable, I become very frustrated but I agree with Iblive , your ability is much further advanced than mine.
Also like Iblive I just play for my own enjoyment

We all have that day….

Just play to have fun and enjoy.

Ive been frustrated with my playing too I think we all are.
Take a break and I hope you feel better dude.

Just remember why you start playing…. Its because you enjoy…. Playing complex things are hard and even pros have hard time time to time. You are human and you are allowed to have emotions….

Rest and lets go again.

Do it for fun and for love.

Take care

I’m sad to read of your frustration, and hope that you change your mind about quitting. You’re not alone in feeling this way…I am not terribly happy with my skills when factoring in the time spent either. However, long ago, I decided that my playing was for me and my pleasure. If others like it…great…if not…oh well. I’m not likely to ever be a shredder…nor do I care to be. I just want to be proficient at reproducing my own imagination.

This is a great thread in the sense that Seamus is sharing with us his frustrations and the dissatisfaction he has (in his own mind) about his skills as a guitar player. I disagree with his opinion of himself. Aside from what I've heard of his guitar playing, he has a talent for orchestrating songs.

It's also a great thread because it's a great reminder to all of us that the critic we fear the most can be at times... our ownself.

Thank you, Sarge. But that playing was mostly composed, not improvised. It took me days to work it out.
Some people cannot improvise, others cannot work on something again and again and work it out at all. We each have our strengths. Play what you love and just enjoy it! Jazz can get a bit... complex.... play some punk for a bit and feel much better about your playing!!

That’d be me. Can’t improvise. Can’t write music or lyrics. So I do covers…. Well…. At least I try to do covers.

We all go into a "slump" at some point.

Whenever I do, that's when I remember the immortal words of Mookie Wilson..
