I really really hate soldering, circuits, stuff...

Men fear what they do not understand.
There is really nothing to that pickup swap.
Practice a bit on scrap, follow Smitty's advice, and have at it.
Make sure the iron is HOT for the joint you will make - you need to heat the joint quickly, get a good flow, and get out.

Sounds like instructions printed on a bong...
I've never seen instructions like that on a bong, but years ago I decided to try a little herb called Salvia Divinorum. It did have instructions on how to use it, and some of those instructions included things like "Use a bong. Use a torch lighter. You want quick, high, intense heat. Inhale deeply. Hold in the smoke and count to 30..."

That stuff made my bong smell like old burned fish and rubber.

So anyway, I am no good at soldering, I just popped in because Robert started talking about bongs...

I can do the soldering. It might not surprise anyone that I was rubbish originally and then I got better through practice, just like playing guitar ...

40W iron
60/40 leaded solder (if you can get it)
Cleaning surfaces is a good idea
Get the solder hot and liquid, if it is cored solder you should see a bit of flux coming out
Get some electronics flux
Keep your iron tip in good condition and change as needed
Get in and out as fast as you can with the iron nice and hot
Use "helping hands" and some kind of magnifier as needed
22awg wire is generally what you need, although sometimes 18awg might work well for circuit board like those on the new CTS push-pull pots
Make sure the working environment is a comfortable temperature, not too cold
Buy a decent multimeter with a continuity checker

I'm interested in the control cavity shielding I am seeing. What benefit can I expect? If my guitar isn't making any extraneous noise now will I gain anything? Or is it more of a live performance/lots more electronics around preventative?

Gain is a key word as in High Gain, lots of pedals or hot pickups, pretty soon it sounds like bacon frying. If your not into any of that why bother with it. I dont think in the early days The Who or Jimi worried about such nonsence :) Just sayin. If it aint broke why fix it.

I have shielded guitars that are noisier than none shielded ones -- I have hollow body with P90 that is stupid quiet---go figure---

if it needs it do it--- if its quiet---- why go to the hassle because (dont let anyone tell you otherwise) its a P.I.A. ---

I'm not convinced, you're all wrong, soldering should only be done by robots in factories, circuits should be designed/worked on by AI in laboratories, end of; it's the devil's work.

Now, Don O's work is a think of beauty.

Lastly, a message to jtcnj

Men fear what they do not understand.

I fear nothing!
(Except the wife, obviously...)

sadly someone HAS TO SOLDER the robots together--- to work to do the soldering
you need to heat the joint quickly, get a good flow, and get out.
oh so true --- so true --- ;)

I do not fear soldering--- I dont NOT understand soldering -- I just dont LIKE DOING IT---I understand taxes --- and how a tooth is removed --- and how FUN DIVORCE IS ---but I dont want to DO ANY OF THOSE THINGS either :)

its not that I dont understand it --- nor do I fear it --- I just hate it ----
