I am very very interested in this amp 15W Iconic

Interesting little amp. I bet I’d find some fun in there….
Just watched this…

It is way different from its PP predecessor…but maybe in a good way.

I’d be down with that…more of a “round brown sound”.
I’m just happy to see a single ended, greater than 5-10 watt, amp with an interesting preamp…and a few bells and whistles.
It is single ended and does have all of those bells and whistles. The video is however not so much Brown, it’s more Red.

With the 15W being new and getting a bunch of attention , I played the previous 40w 6L6 Iconic and I like it so much am thinking about selling the Studio Classic. But I will have to wait until these new 15W EL34 single ends show up in store to compare them.

I really like that its EL34 driven. I dig the Iconic amps. I have the 6L6 versions, the 80 watt head and 40 watt combo. Fun to play. I always play the green OD side. Totally waste the red side of the amp. I should just buy one channel amps.:giggle:

I've never played the 34 driven ones though. So other than clips i got no opinion yet.

Same, except I have not pulled the trigger on the iconic yet.

I was looking at them. I just don't like EL34s and I don't care for the direct replacements either. I wish it came with 6L6s instead of EL34s.

It's too late for me anyway, I already moved on.
I know you said it’s too late, but have you tried a real 6CA7? Kind of sits in between a EL34 and a 6L6. My JCM800 4104 is set up with a pair of EH 6CA7’s, and I like them better than any other modern day EL34’s that I’ve tried in the past.

I don't know what you mean by "real", I have a set of JJ 6CA7s and a set of JJ KT77s that I tried in my 5150 and my Ceriatone King Kong. I like both of them better than EL34s, but not enough to keep an EL34 amp around, I'm done with all things EL or their direct replacements.
Right now I'm having a love affair with KT66s in my Origin. They're the best sounding power tubes I've ever tried.

AFAIK, real 6CA7s have a beam tetrode type of construction. EL34’s have a pentode type of construction. The description for JJ 6AC7’s are marketed as a beam pentode tube, which makes it even more confusing. But in general, 6CA7’s are a bit more punchier, break up a little later, less midrangey than a EL34, and the top end is not as glassy as a 6L6.

So who makes the real ones? :hmmm:
