I am too old to fool people!

This crazy thing about aging stuff that is pretty new but people want it to look like it was on a world tour. Every one knows they never left Ohio. I bought a pair of nickel pickup covers because I believed this fat guy on you tube. He said these covers make them sound clear and like Jimmy Page. I have never been on a world tour and no plans to do it. Most of my guitars look like they never left the house because they never did. My old guitars look nice and new.
Relic is a finish? A bad day for the painter cause he dropped it and missed a few spots. If you have torn pants and a wreck for a guitar, ok the guy probably sleeps on dirty sheets.
I play in front of people I try to look good and my guitar is clean and in good condition. I care about my tone and how it delivered.
What do you think? You play and these days people look and judge you on how you come off!
Do care what they think. I not the artsy type and I like to look as good as I play. You agree?

I do not understand relic'd guitars. It is even more bizarre that it cost extra. I assume the idea is to give the appearance that you have a vintage guitar, since many young people who own them could not have lived long enough to wear them in that way.

I can except honest wear, but I do not welcome it. Then again, this is only one example of form over substance and the selling of an image. It is an unfortunate cornerstone of society.

It is such a huge topic in so many guitar forums. I don't understand it myself.....

I have MOSTLY bought old used beat to crap pawn shop and yard sale guitars they come "pre reliced" and I dont give to craps if the cat knocks it over or the dog scratches......which scratch was it--- HELL I have one a SQUIRREL nibbled on the headstock-----

I assume the idea is to give the appearance that

---- its "buying street cred" its "instant mojo" --- its APPEARANCE that you did the hard work ---that came up through the ranks that you arent some upper middle class trust fund baby trying to play back alley grunge gutter guy ------

I have also gotten GREAT deals on pre beat up guitars.....because they are BEAT UP--- ---oh it has a ding a gouge --- a crack....knock of 300.00 and I will pay you now........and it works

my recent G3 bass --- I got it for HALF OFF the going rate---- it has a few "picadillos" but who cares --- HALF OFF --- is half off baby
Im still playing and loving it-- sounds amazing and I am not wearing "kid gloves" when I take it out of the case....to gaze at it--- dont TOUCH it -- just look at it it can never be PLAYED----- just listen..........hear that.......?????

the only argument on the other side is preference and taste, which is acceptable

Exactly. For some, they just like the look, and how it got there is irrelevant. Others, like adrian says, are buying street cred, which is ridiculous. It's either real relic or it's fake relic. Mojo can't be purchased.

I do know relic, or stressing, is big with furniture these days. People like to buy thrift furniture and paint it in a relic fashion. It's sole purpose is a visual thing, and I get that. but, I absolutely don't get paying $4100 for this fake relic from Sweetwater. Insane!!

The best (and only worthwhile) relic jobs are the ones you do yourself. On average they probably take around 25-40 years to do properly, depending on how much you play your guitar.

I don't get the point of relicing new guitars in any other way.

Many relic owners are about 17 years old. Were they even alive long enough to put in enough time on the guitar? Hard sell!

I have had several Strats and I could not get the paint to wear off like the one above. I can't even get it down to the bare wood by hand sanding it. Some ones arm pit go the paint off ? No that person needs to go to a stink clinic. The Pentagon wants to put those arm pits to work.

FWIW... I appreciate and enjoy looking at reliced guitars. Lots of skill and extra time goes into a well done relic. It's a form of art. There obviously is a niche for the relic guitar business, so more power to the manufacturer and those that are willing to pay extra for ownership. I have never met a guitar player who purposely bought a new-relic. So I can't honestly say what the players true intentions are when showing off the guitar.

On the other hand, I would not feel psychologically comfortable owning an artificially reliced guitar, no matter how well the job was done.

I'm starting to feel like a bit of a relic myself.
I have scars, splinters, cuts, and bruises.
And thats only over the last couple of weekends.

But I sure as hell didnt do it on purpose.
Its just the trip down the bumpy road of life.

Which is the true road worn wear I can appreciate.
I never bought jeans with stains, rips and tears in them; I add those myself along the way too.

I have a bunch of old well loved guitars. They do looked played but far from beat. I am putting nickel covers on my Gibson Studio because I never did like the shiny chrome covers. I'm not trying to make it look like something it is not. Just something more to my taste, I'm not a very shiny man.

They only loved me for my scares, I still have a bullet in my left leg.
