The word "stinker" actually means "speed" in Norwegian. The term for a speed bump is "fartsdump".
The words most commonly used for "stinker" are "promp", "fis" or "fjert". I guess you could say they are all onomatopoetica. A stinker resulting in the massive accident pictured above could be called a "braker" (pronounced "brah-ker"). "Brak" means a loud noise, like that of thunder. Yep! "Smell" can mean "bang", "impact" or in some instances "damage". When talking humorously about car crashes we often use the phrase "it's not the stinker that kills you, it's the smell". Silly, but it works when you know Norwegian.
