How much longer will guitars remain popular?

Remember the economy sucks. One of my guilty pleasures is watching Antique Roadshow. Sometimes they have an older episode with updated prices. Most stuff decreases. With a bad economy, who can afford new, top line stuff.

That is so cool Adrian, on the MF in the Backstage, I started a thread called, Who’s helping out the next generation, it got a bit of activity before it went to sleep! I have no idea how to bring a link, but it’s over there

P:lol: P:lol::pound-hand::pound-hand:

There will always be live music, we the old people may not care for it but it will be there.
The Blues will NEVER die and that IS guitar based music.
thats my 11/2 cents worth. Ya know with inflation and all.
i think more of the internet gear sites are full of antagonistic people..they found a hobby of being negative..i cant go on the internet the day before recording.. I mean some idiot will kick ya down even in family tragedy..they hiding behind it all...i have had an Open challenge on TDPRI for 2 years..my dime ..my time..lets debunk the myths..i post clips of real gear being used yet they still mouth off about it for pages on end..even with proof on a clip of amp doing what they say it cant..my challenge has been on my dime..a pro video...you can bring all your amps..guitars ya want..i will take my JMP50 & supposedly POS 2014 Gibson SGJ...i will hire a backing band...play your songs..known covers,,then you have to play my stuff...i will comp for you while you lead & then we swap roles..any & all genres...100% fair & nuetral..i will pay for..Nope ..not 1 taker ..in fact insults thrown at me & my family..now on MF a few know me & have been on stage with ..so that site is ok,,its getting a lil rougher with stupidity tho..the Gibson stuff is senseless...the bedroom level stuff is such a waste of time..so they create negativity in the industry cause of lack of being a real player who can simply..provide references of the skill or represent the gear right..its their way of taking the foicus off their lies & mouth..its why ..the ones in bigger bands don't come on the sites..they just get chased off in childish jealous attacks..you would be surprised who is on the sites under dif names..

But...do they care about music made with guitars? I mean, isn't that really the reason we all learned to play? The fact that "our" music was made with them and our heroes wielded them like excalibur? Me and my buddies had the attention span of a gnat, many many years before video games and cell phones, but we put in the time because it excited us and we were motivated by the music.

The last couple of generations, by and large and of course excluding the experimental college years, were weaned on music made with computers and drum machines. If there's a guitar in there at all it's not something distinct enough to pick out and go "I want to be able to do THAT" - instead, and kid with a computer (so, all of them) can make modern music instantly and with even a modicum of perseverance put together something that resembles their favorite tunes in no time.

I agree. I still play every morning. It's my dedicated practice time. I'll throw on some music, put on my phones and jam while reading the latest TTR posts...often writing new ones between songs.

But bands like Nirvana, Blink-182 and Green Day made technical prowess unnessecary. Your "hero" isnt hard to emulate now. You just need tattoos and a Hot Topic gift card.

I hear ya loud and clear bro, and you my brother know I would jump at the chance to head your way, if it could work on my end unfortunately I can’t, they would have to drag me back, lol.

Robert and I where just chatting this morning about know it all bedroom players, nothing against them but please, they just need to keep their amp settings and internet knowledge to themselves and there circle of believers, that want to get that bedroom tone to sound like there heroes bands, those of us that know what your instrument needs to sound like in a LIVE mix will continue down our wayward path!

I / we live in the generation of our knowing; some stay there.
Some try to keep absorbing the next generation of music for as long as or until, they don't.
Some explore the past as well.

The things we dig most fervently likely were popular at the time.
Disco was popular in my time.
I HATE that crap!!

70's classic rock, with a bit of overlap in either direction, is my where my musical soul lives.
But I am not bound solely to it.
If the guitar / 4 piece rock band - centric format dies with me so be it.
Still see teenagers wearing Led Zeppelin (and others) tee shirts.

As for big egos on forums, I dont care if someone thinks my cheap gear is all crap one bit.

"Somethings goin' on here
I have a bad, bad feeling
That my baby don't live here no more
(That's alright I still got my guitar, look out now!) "

That’s what I like to see, and that’s how I have carried myself for more than 40 years now, not ever going to bow down, not ever going to change, and if it’s not your cup of tea/ coffee?
That’s why we are what we are.
I refuse to surrender the hard rocking flag I want to carry!
Cheers Mitch

on that sad day when you eventually will have to pass on...i say they make your garage...the "Garage Rock..Hall of Fame."..leave the door open all the time for people to drive by..listen to some good loud hard rock & then they will always know where the heart of rock lived for many of us.....toss that gear in the garage..turn it up..somebody hit the drums..lets Go !!

Every now and then this topic of the supposed waning popularity of guitar comes up.

Personally, it doesn’t matter to me one way or the other.

The same is true of different forms of music, whether that be rock, blues, metal...whatever.

I don’t feel the need to defend or bolster the popularity of the guitar, electric or acoustic. If it loses popularity and is adopted more into a support role as musical styles change, that’s no big deal. I still like it and will keep playing it. I don’t really need it to score high in the polls to feel validated in my decision to play it.

In fact, it could be argued that the heavy predominance of guitar, especially electric guitar, from the ‘50s through the 1990s and 2000s represented a lopsided presence of the guitar in music, and that we may be entering somewhat of a correction (if, in fact, the guitar truly is waning in popularity). Aside from the newer metal and hard rock bands, I’m guessing the guitar in many of the other new bands is simply adopting a different role.

And that’s fine.

It would be unrealistic to expect that music should continue ad infinitum as we experienced it years ago.

Knowing Mitch, he will have a huge man cave upstairs for all to hear his glorious riffs...:dance::cheers:

Because of the we are all able to share our favorite riffs, melodies, and passion, my attempts at music are always going to be right here, and this something that I have been wanting, waiting, to be able to do for a very long time and I am not finished yet!
Cheers Brother’s
