How do Private Messages work here?

I don't see any facilitation for Private Messages. I only see "Direct Messages", which gives you the ability to edit other people's posts. Why would I want to have a discussion with someone who can edit my responses? I don't see the use for that.

Is there a way to have normal private discussions like other forums have?

There are a few ways to start a PM…
These are two of them…

IIRC, the top of the page, beside your name, the little envelope….if you click that, you can get at your mailbox…I think that you can fire one off from there too.

DM (conversation) = PM
Works as you'd expect.
Not sure where you're getting the "edit other people's posts" thing.

I'm in what appears to be a DM with another member. Clearly, I can edit his posts, and I assume he can edit mine. There's an Edit button at the bottom of the message, next to "Report".

What's the difference between "Start conversation" and "Direct Message"?

Whichever it is, DM's or PM's, users currently have the ability to edit the posts of others in the conversation. I have verified this with two members. Can this be fixed please?

Vin is right about the edit someone else's post in a DM.
What's up with that?
I guess I just never noticed it before.
