How and why to cut mids

I saw a photo somewhere of Slash's GE-7 and its an inverted V. I'm guessing he's pushing a lot of mids in a live setting to try and replicate the tone on the recording????

I auditioned for Soloman Grundy back in June 2017. We were in a rehearsal studio/recording complex in Rancho Cucamonga. I showed up with my Gibson SG and a DSL40C.

Merrill, the bandleader, had a Marshall Major head on a slant cab, and he was playing a Gibson LPC Triple Crown (what Buck called the triple humbucker models) and Dude, it was ungodly loud.

So I plug in with no effects, straight into the amp on 40 watt setting, and i'm tuning down a half step as requested, and I had what I felt was the perfect EQ that I had dialed in at home.

F**K!!!

It all went out the window right then and there. During the soundcheck/mixcheck, I had to crank the $hit out of my DSL40C, and then the speaker was protesting, so I was rolling off bass and resonance to get cleaned volume.

I think I was running my volume on Lead 1 at around 7 and I had foam earplugs in because I forgot my Hearoes. That DSL40C got a real workout that night and, surprisingly, my tone blended in nicely.

When I plugged in the next day at home, I thought my EQ sounded like total $hit!!!

I was obligated to another band at the time, but I had a great time. Great bunch of guys too.

Soloman Grundy opened for Great White at The Whisky on December 29, 2017 and they are opening for Jefferson Starship next month.

Interestingly, they split with their rhythm guitarist (literally) right before the December 29th Whisky performance (I've heard several versions, but none I can confirm) and called in a mutual band friend at the last minute to fill in. He's still with them currently.
