Hot Rodding a DSL40C???

Robert, I didn't think to notice because I really just used it on one set of tubes in my JMP 1987 and have as yet to do so with the 6550's 12 ax7's in my Super. I will try some in my Laney and Super and report back once I do.

Breaking News:

A music colleague and I were chatting on the smoke deck this morning (I don't smoke) and the progress on the DSL40C came up. As we discussed the topic, he reached in his bag and pulled out a boxed tube.

He said, "This is the magic bean. Trust me. Try it only in V1."

I then fitted the following:

V1: GE 12AU7
V2: Marshall ECC83S
V3: JJ ECC83MG
V4: JJ 5751

Holy Biscuits!!! I was expecting no changes, but the improvement was phenomenal. No volume loss, but whereas I couldn't run the gain on Lead 2 above 1-2 on the dial, I was now rattling the walls at noon on the dial.

Lead 1 gain can now be cranked to 8-9 without muddiness.

This single tube has produced the single biggest change in the DSL40C's behavior - more than a speaker swap - and second only to the TS-9 of ChasFred.

Incredible!!!!

I have a single 12 extension cab for my DSL40c. I've even used my cabinet. And it surely brings the amp to life a bit....but for me, it kind of defeats the purpose of having a small, manageable combo amp.

I think it's a good amp overall, but it has its limitations for sure, most of which you discuss in detail. . I've replaced the tubes, but I've never gotten it back to where it was when I first brought it home.

At the band room, I use the "house" ibanez tube amp. No idea of the model, it sucks, and I hate it. But, that little ibanez amp is the number one upgrade to making my DSL40 sound great!!:)
