Hole fill options

I have a 20 yr old guitar with a hole from previous tuners. I was going to leave it. I thought about toothpicks, putty. I ain't Dan Erlewine, so the dowel method is out. How would you fill it?

You can get wood filler that colour. It isn't structural so it only has to work cosmetically.

I thought of that, but it's hard to find an exact color match. Maybe it's my OCD. It is on the back of the headstock. I think it'll have to do.

You can always buy a tube each of lighter and darker, then mix to get your shade.

Toothpick or small bamboo skewer dipped in wood glue, gently tapped into hole, then shaved off flush with razorblade.
To seal everything up a drop of lacquer or thin super glue should darken the repair close to the surrounding maple.

Walmart had 100 bamboo skewers for 88 cents. I cut the very tip off one that matched the color. I glued it and trimmed with very sharp hobby knives.

Very cool and nice job, Chubbles. Now go back to Walmart and return that package of skewers for a full refund. Tell them that one skewer was missing, and the rest of them might have been contaminated...

Before this dramatic repair, I wanted to suggest that filling the hole with a tiny solid gold screw would add some breathtaking charm.
I still maintain that a solid GOOOOOOOOLD screw would be a better choice, and would improve the sustain, too!

Actually I have 12 or 18 to fill just havent the time.

Another option I use in work working is using saw dust of the same wood type. Mix a little Elmer’s glue with the saw dust and fill the hole a little high. Let dry and than sand to flush. If the wood has been stained then add a drop of stain into the mix.

Exactly how I repair holes in wood. Works pretty decent.
