I love watching this guy. He has a bunch of these videos. This one happens to be two of my favorite.

Check it out. I love the expressions he has in the green shirt. If you were to pick which guitarist you like better, which would it be ... only these two choices!

This is a tough one for me.
James is obviously a big part of the life blood of the band.
Jeff was also a writer and I think he was a big part of most of the songs written by Slayer. He could also do leads, which Hetfield doesnt do.

Overall talent, its James Hetfield Writer, Singer, Guitarist.
Jeff Hanneman (RIP) could also write, but his lead work was superior to Hetfield.

Can I splice them and vote Jeff Hetfield?

I'm gonna have to go with overall importance to the band and talent, Hetfield ... but it's not a hands down thing for me.

Jeff could lead for sure, but I wouldn't call his leads very musical at all lol
Of course, his style of lead is something that might only fit with Slayer's music.

James did record a couple of leads though....but they're not very flashy and impressive or anything. The solo in Nothing Else Matters, for example, Is James' work.

I agree, his lead style along with Kerry King was what made Slayer sound like Slayer.

They are not options, it was either Hetfield or Hanneman.
We can open up a real big can of worms if we include anyone.
Hetfield and Hanneman were founding members of their respective bands and each is/was an integral piece of the puzzle.
These are your two choices ...

That's true, but he chose Hammett and Holt for a reason. Those two are/were both founding members of Exodus.
Not that anyone in/was in Exodus was part of the question lol

Ironic that Hammett ended up in Metallica, while Holt ended up in Slayer, the same two bands talked about in the OP!

James wrote great songs and riffs.
He also wrote some that I strongly dislike.
James sings and plays, kudo points for being hard to do.
I loved James early voice, strongly dislike newer one.

Jeff wrote and played much more technical music. He brought the speed to the band. His tone isn't perfect, but it was great and never changed much over the years. Because it didn't need to.
Jeff wasn't the showman that Kerry was, or even James is, but he was a better guitarist.

In the giant scheme of things, Metallica is the most popular/commercial (lower case m) metal band of all time.
And well, Slayer is f#@king Slayer!

James brings a little more to the table from a production and importance part, Metallica wouldn't be Metallica without him. Jeff was replaced and Slayer is still Slayer.

James wins in overall points, but my right pickhand is screaming at me that it votes Jeff!

I know nothing of Slayer because they are a little too heavy for my tastes.

As for Metallica, they have not always been (m)etal. They became popular early on with no airplay.

Their sound changed over the years to the commercial sound you mention, but I still love them!

I have every one of the huge boxsets they put out of their first 5 albums. All fantastic stuff for me!

Do you have one of these?

...I used to have one of those. The stage lights would light up and flash, and it would play the heavy bridge fron One.
It was accidentally destroyed by fire (long story lol)
I still have little Lars, but all the others were destroyed. I should have kept James, he was only half melted....and funny enough, just a couple of years after the time period that these action figures were based on....James did actually accidentally melt/burn his ass pretty good onstage lol

...Little Lars still hangs around the jamroom, kinda wish I had little James's burnt ass hanging out too haha!

As someone who only occasionally listens to metal, I feel I am uniquely qualified to provide an opinion!!!

Before offering my opinion, I am assuming the choice is between the playing of Hetfield and Hanneman, as depicted in this video. Of course, the irony is that neither Hetfield nor Hanneman are actually playing. The playing is being performed by Blue Shirt Guy and Green Shirt Guy, who are actually the same person!

Tricky!

My choice, based strictly on this video, is for Green Shirt Guy, depicting Hanneman. My choice is based on the following observations:

1. Green Shirt Guy’s playing demonstrated more variety.
2. Green Shirt Guy had better facial expressions.
3. Green Shirt Guy’s green shirt coordinates better with the background.

There ya have it, and there ya are!

And all valid unbiased points!
Reason number 2 scores big with me. Especially the stink eye he gives blue shirt guy.

Well, in that case, my gut would say James - but pretty much all the Metallica stuff I really love was written by either Cliff Burton, Dave Mustaine or Kirk Hammett. But, Het had a hand in that and as much as I love early Slayer as well, if you made me choose back in the heyday of thrash, I would have gone Metallica.

So James.
