Having one of THOSE days today

Mcblink you are a ghost. I used to run into it every once in a while doing the Harley financing. You basically don't have a credit score. Do what jtcnj says and get a gas card or something similar to get on the credit radar. No normal financial institution will loan you money without a credit score unless your grandpa owns the bank. I know a guy who hasn't had a job in 30 years, is worth a couple mil but pays for everything. He has a great relationship with his bank, but I couldn't get him a loan on an $18k Harley. He just wrote a check for it.
Yep, a ghost.

Pretty much sums it up.

I really really really really really hate the idea of debt, but in all my years avoiding having credit, it seems that it's harder to get ahead without it.

To me, it's almost counter-intuitive that you kinda have to dig a hole to get out of a hole, if that makes sense lol....but, it's just the way it is.

You know what really looks good to me?

Homesteading.

I don't think there's anywhere left to do such a thing. Alaska was the last frontier, as I understand it it's damn near impossible to stake a claim even there anymore.

Otherwise, I think Alaska would suit me just fine. I don't necessarily care for the cold, but they've recorded 100°F at Fort Yukon before. And even though I may not love the cold, I know I can handle it just fine.

Here's me a couple of years back during a duck hunting day.

Im all about homesteading -- problem is they only offer the option (limited as it is) in places ..................................that make your face do that!
As I remember though- the ducks were good that day. If I recall correctly, this was taken on a hunt that LRT and I did together.

I believe his beard looked much the same

We had a good time, got some ducks, and I don't even remember the cold. I remember enjoying the day.

oh I ALWAYS remember the cold-----you cant fathom my disdain for the stuff --

But Ya'll have fun up there ;)

You dont have to think of credit / debt as a hole and a shovel.
The only way to buy big ticket items like homes and newer cars is by a loan.
I hate paying ANY interest but thats the way it is .
The consumer debt hole YOU have control of how much you dig - as I laid out in my earlier post.
I know, and I know you're right.

It just literally the antithesis of my many years avoiding the whole idea of credit. It's not easy for me to want to jump into, y'know? If that makes sense anyway...

-- not to derail-- we hired a feller last week from Ohio -- road crew experience -- he talked a good talk--
he last 1.5 days and quit --- "I cant take this heat" --- BUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

ya gotta be a special kinda carpet baggin damn yankee to make it here.............................believe m I KNOW

and on the credit front-- BEEN in both boats
Ive had NO debt and basically no credit -- at one time I couldn't BORROW $ against the HOME I OWNED (like 25% of the value)
Ive had an 800+ credit score and more debt than I could count --- and an under 500 credit score--and more debt than I could count

the REALITY of all the "learning" I paid for is

its all just numbers on computer screens--- at this point I (and MOST people) are never going to live long enough or make enough to pay it all off --

put it all in your name protect your wife and off spring and "F" the man on the way out is my moto ;)

Pirate Code Mate ;)

It does make sense, it is a seductive temptress and it is encouraged by society .
That is why I always encouraged my kids to pay cash for day to day purchases- and to think of how long they worked for the money they are about to hand over for something. At the same time explaining how credit can be managed and used wisely.

I have said for decades the easy availability of credit - and longer and longer home mortgage terms of 40+ years, and now 7 year car loans, etc. is a trick.
The same is true for govt. sponsored student loans enabling the college institutions (?) to raise tuition and fees ridiculously and leave the student with crushing debt. It is a corrupt scam.

It masks the fact that real relative incomes for working class folks have been stagnant or declined since the '70's.
It encourages folks to look at the monthly payment instead of the actual cost of the debt.

You can handle the poisonous snake if you do it informed and wisely; you dont want to but it can be dealt with.

Snake, you say?

In a song I once wrote about a rattle snake, the very last lyrical line in the song is
"so I go and do what must be done: bury the head from the snake"

It's never before occurred to me that instead of killing the snake, I could learn to instead handle it, and use it to my advantage.
