Harvest Moon cover recording

I was quite intrigued by it. I will admit, I had heard a lot of Neil Young over the years but I don’t remember the song. My wife did recognize it.
Harvest Moon is a favorite here. Also a song done on the MTV Unplugged show Neil did.

My story on this song. Been doing the opening riff for a long time. Just never felt it sounded right. Decided it was time to actually learn the song. Figured out Neil does it in Drop D. Changed the tuning…. And there it was. Got what I’d been missing.

The thing here is that whenever it was that I ever recorded a cover tune my one intention was NOT to replicate the original guitar performances as originally recorded.

Think about that. You like that Jefferson Airplane song "White Rabbit", right? You are completely free to record a cover version in your own style of guitar playing. Just do it. (y) Hop to it!

Oh yeah. No problem there. I don’t ever seem to play a song the same way as I’ve done before. No way I can duplicate the artist. :pound-hand:

But you are correct. If you’re covering a song. Make it your own. On the other hand. If you’re a Pink Floyd Tribute Band, you’d better be note for note because that’s what people a paying to see.

As for Harvest Moon. What I was trying to say and didn’t was…. I was playing correct chords. Just was not sounding right to my ears. It was after I figured out the Drop D thing is when the tones came together for me.

…… And I am working on this one. Primarily working on the bass line. Basically have it down. Listen to the song. The bass line is actually fairly easy, even for me. Then I’ll go after the guitar parts.

I played bass in a band that covered White Rabbit. To really nail it is not easy. I'm pretty sure Jack used three fingers for plucking. I did an abbreviated version.

I knew I wasn’t doing it right. Really went simple. I did try to get the correct picking…. But was only using two. So now that you mention it, bet he was doing 3 fingers.

I’ve watched videos of Entwhistle playing bass. I swear that guy used all 8 fingers and both thumbs when he played.
