I like the middle position on the G400. Usually do 10 on the neck tone and somewhere in the middle on the bridge tone. Then play with the two volumes to get what I’m looking for. Sometimes I have the neck cranked and the bridge volume low. Or I’ll crank the bridge and keep the neck low volume.
For some things, or if I'm just trying to copy some Jimmy Page tones, I'll go middle position and also up the bridge volume a bit and then control the overall with the neck volume. Opened up you get that big, rich nasal almost out of phase thing but as it backs off gives a thinner bridge tone with just a bit of the honk left to smooth it out. Got this trick from watching Joe Perry in the '70s - he was too wasted all the time to bother with both volumes so just rode the neck one, haha.
