Guitar Necks

Hmmm...

I started out on a 1.00 straight neck profile on a 59 Daniele trophy, which was made after a Fender 'U' profile.

I don't care for thin necks, but they don't cause me any discomfort.

I ordered my newest Warmoth with an 1-3/4" nut in their 'Boatneck' profile.

The first thing to work out is how you're holding yourself when you get the pain, the work out another way to do what ever it is without hurting yourself.

Slinging the guitar around your knees and posing in front of the mirror probably ain't the best thing for your wrist position ... :D

I play mostly seating down, I think I have to straighten up wrist instead having in bent position....

I must be the exception. I don’t care what shape the neck is as long as it’s not really thick like some Gibson 50’s necks. I can feel the difference but the difference doesn’t bother me. The easiest to play, though not the most comfortable, neck I’ve played was an old Kalamazoo archtop with a very pronounced V neck. As mentioned it was very easy to use your thumb on the E and even A string. It was also easy sliding up and down the neck. The most uncomfortable and hardest to play was a Gibson 50’s SG reissue. That said none of them hurt my hand and none of them bothered me enough that I didn’t like playing them.

As i age, the guitar sure is creeping up higher, shortening the strap by the year it seems. It does change right hand landing position and moves the wrist on left hand into much different positioning.

I find bigger necks more comfortable. I went 1-3/4" wide on this new neck in hopes open chords will be easier to hold with my dime-sized fingertips...

Ths bill is at the tip of my left middle finger..

Fender necks show some love for the D necks 6/1959 to 6/1962 not to be confused with the A B C D nut width.
Next 1959 early 1960 Les Paul Standard neck size it works for me. My guess it's a D also.
In this photo all have D necks and Brazilian rosewood fingerboards my choice.

@Ramo - the Jackson neck profiles tend to be thin / slim.

I can play slim necks ok -my Jackson Dinky and Epi G400 SG both have slim necks.
But rounder necks just feel more natural to me.

the Gibson studio faded I just got is said to be the 50's neck profile.
It is rounded but it is not the "baseball bat" you hear of.

When I put my hand around it is like I am Dorothy and those magic slippers fit just right.

Yes it feels slim and thin as IF IT was on starvation :)

I have 8 guitars. Every one of them has a distinctly different neck shape. They range from rather thin, to fat and chunky. I can play them all without a problem. I do like flatter fretboard radius, like 12 to 14 inches, and I feel pretty comfortable on necks that have a bit of shoulder.

This guitar has a neck that I love. It's a slim U shape (at least that's what ESP calls it). Around the thickness of a modern C, but with shoulders, and has a 14 inch radius. I also like big frets, and this one has extra jumbos. For me, this guitar is my easiest one to play, and it gets a :poo: load of playing time.
