Guitar is a percussion instrument

When you think about it the guitar is technically a percussive instrument since you are hitting the strings like hitting a snare drum, etc. Those were excellent videos...I really liked that Ben Lacy vid where he made his guitar sound almost like bongo drums. Very impressive for sure. The second video was also outstanding the way he combined rhythm and lead all together. That's the style I like to try to master on my guitar...you've inspired me Ray!(y)

I remember a music class in college where the professor asked us if the piano was a percussion instrument or a stringed instrument. We all responded that we thought it was a stringed instrument, at which he reminded us it created sound by striking the strings with hammers.

He wasn’t really trying to make a point one way or the other, he just wanted to get us thinking about things a little differently to realize some things aren’t so easily classified as we may think.

I don’t recall what our collective conclusion was. I think we came away from the class still thinking the piano was a stringed instrument, but we had a greater appreciation for it...and it became good fodder for us to try to sound really intelligent back in the dining hall!

Yup, pitched percussion, traditionally part of the rhythm section in a orchestra, often sitting with the drum kit.

I think trying to define what a guitar “is” is complicated by the fact that it lends itself to so many uses.

Officially, it is defined as a plucked, stringed instrument.

But, that belies how one may use it.

It can be played melodically.

It can be played rhythmically.

It can be played percussively.

I suppose the flexibility of usage is one of those things that draw me so much to it.
