Guess what I made...

Sure. Took the old fan motor with the blades attached, cut the blades off the hub with a sawzall, put the whole rig in a vice and hooked up DC to the leads. Then I sanded off the remains of the blades which balanced it up pretty good. Cut a circle of plywood and screwed it to the hub. Balanced that with a file and sandpaper. Attached the sanding disc to the wood and built the stand. I hot glued the psu to the back of the piece the motor is mounted on.
 
I was looking at an old box fan in the garage this morning. I still use it as a fan, but if the plastic front or back was damaged, one could do something similar and already have it mounted in a frame that could be modified to suit a project like this. 3 speeds might come in handy I guess.
