In Grade two when I was a youngin, I had a Great teacher who's name was Mrs. Gillespie , she was a spinster, she must have been close to 65 maybe older. She even taught one of my Aunts.

I will never forget her, she was a tough lady but fair, I can remember my buddy was whispering beside me in class when a piece of chalk popped off my forehead. Neil and I got into a bit of trouble a couple of times, both he and I one timed received a pointer stick across the knuckles ouch!

But I can tell you we soon started to pay attention. At the time I lived in a rural town in Northern Ontario of a 1,000 residents . So everybody pretty much new who everyone was. So if you got in trouble of any kind whether it be in school or otherwise, it spread quickly. Anyway's some of course did find out , yes including my parents. Any way I made it through that ordeal.

After that worked hard and ended up passing in her class with all As. She had a soft side as well, if you were doing good and showing progress, she would be right there to give you encouragement. Aside from that she would reward me for my good work and others as well.

Because it was a small town the public school was centralized near a gas station, homes and the downtown was close by as well. Her home was less than a 10 minute walk from the school, now today Teachers wouldn't think of doing this, but this was back in the day when there was much less politics and remember it was a small town.

So she said to me one day if I liked soup, of course I said yes, she asked me if I would like to come to her home for lunch, I said sure. So we walked to her home and she put on the tv so I could watch cartoons. Then she came with homemade soup and a sandwich, man it was good. So after lunch we continued to walk back to school.

Like I said there was an Esso gas station across the road from the school, Mrs. Gillespie gave me a dime to go in and buy a bag of chips. I will never forget the generosity this Woman showed me. I wish she were still here today, to thank her for her kindness and great teaching. She had a major part in shaping my life.
