Gimmie A Break Gibson

I look at it like this... The technique of relicing a guitar can be very artful. This involves a lot more operational expense in achieving the desired results. If it's done right, and with good old marketing, the manufacturer has a market for these types of guitars. The manufacturers can charge whatever they want, but usually this has been analyzed to what they think the consumer will accept.

AFAIK, these high dollar reliced guitars are all selling. It's not like Gibson is making a bunch of these because these are actually very limited. So you have a choice here: Buy one, or not buy one. Gibson will always make shinny examples too. Personally, I admire the work and creativity of a beautifully done reliced guitar... but I choose to never fork out a butt-load of money to own one.

Howfrickingever... If I was very wealthy, I just might buy a $10,000 reliced (Gibson) guitar and hang in a beautiful display case as living room wall art... and never play it!
Sysco... if I was very wealthy I'd fly all the way to LA, go to the forbidden back room in the GC on Sunset Blvd. and splurge those 10,000 or more on the REAL old thang (like a true vintage LP black beauty I saw there once on display) instead of a produced new relic. Then have them reopen the Hamburger Hamlet down the road they closed a few years back just for me and my hungry belly and THEN... fly up to Seattle, go to Emerald City Guitars and buy me a Dumble!! I have spoken! But definitely yes, proper relic-ing of a guitar is somewhat of an art. AND there'll always be a wealthy hipster that will buy it. :pound-hand:

I can find many other way's of spending $10,000, and it wouldn't be on any guitar..

Nothing wrong with bolt on necks, play as good if not even better than a set neck, i know i have both...

Nothing wrong, but a little bit easier to build. And Stats don't have binding or a laminated body or a carved top and all their guts are hung on a pickguard before mounting. They were designed from day one to be easy to mass-produce by unskilled laborers.

Some of those unskilled laborers
I actually prefer bolt on necks. :hide:

I do as well...

Same old pointless argument. No one's going to force you to buy any guitar you don't want. The option is there for people who do want it.

It's funny how the same people who are so gung-ho about the free market are so quick to bash the same idea in actual practice. If nobody liked them no one would make them....
Totally agree. I won't judge what others do. But offer them both ways. When the beat up version is all they offer in Custom Shop then the option isn't really there.

I personally don't like relics. Well, actually I like them just fine, but I prefer my guitars to not be worn/beat up, so I don't buy relics. If it's your thing, more power to ya, but I still reserve the right to my opinion that it is crazy to spend 5-10 K on a guitar.

What I hate is the current round of reissues are all pre beat to hell. Even if it is just the hardware? Why? Can't they make a 1960 reissue in new condition for me to slowly mark up from lovkng it jnstead of pre destroying it?
Then charge 3x more.
Ridiculous.
The ones that are "not" pre-beat are special order and cost more. If that makes sense?
I agree. I would rather have a non-rusted re-issue.

Jeezus, I like the look of real reliced guitars but I find most of these don't look like real relics at all. To me most look like they are trying to hard.

Don't worry, it's just a matter of time, tide, wind and moon phase. It will happen...
