Yes a well made Gibson is indeed awsome. And that The Paul is among the very best i have ever seen from them. I have heard great custom shop Gibsons, and i have actually played some that did not convince me at all. Custom shop ES335s.
And i do myself own two Gibsons: a bass (which needs to be modified until it is really awsome...) and an SG (which only needs nut compensation and a better wraparound bridge allowing me to play flatwounds with a wound G).
Although i am somewhat intrigued by the present semihollow les paul shortscale bass, these two will remain my only Gibsons. Regarding guitars i have all i need, and regarding basses i will follow my ideas and do my own instruments.
Back to Gibson and my remark: a good luthier will be able to make a guitar as great as the one shown above, in any respect, and that for a fraction of the price of that collectible. It would be, say, in the range of the present custom shop Les Pauls or slightly below.
So if You are just interested in a great playing guitar for a fair price and can live without the famous label, the self employed luthier is often the better choice.
